which HDDs to buy

hey guys, i plan on buying two new HDDs. my limit is $110. both HDD now that i'm using is IDE. i have all my Data backed up but is it possible to transfer my partition over to a SATA Type HDD?

been looking at Seagate and Western Digital. been a fan of Western Digital and never had problems.

what i have matched up:

yes, they have a clone disk option.

Yes. It takes the image from one drive and puts it on the other. Your computer won't know the difference.

Transfering OS partition form IDE to SATA it is not possible only if you have mobo chipset that require SATA drivers to be provided during OS installation meaning are not included in the OS. If that is the case the OS partition would be transfered tio the SATA HDD and OS would try to boot but because of missing required SATA drivers it will BSOD. It could be fixed with repair on the OS during witch needed SATA drivers would be provided. And when cloning make sure that destination Partition on new hdd is ACTIVE.

i'll keep this in mind. though my Mobo has Drivers for SATA2 i don't think it's required to install OS or boot from it.

Why the need for two drives? plan on RAID?

For twice what the 250GB drives go for you can get a spinpoint for $99 free shipping for a 1TB drive. Spinpoint

one drive is for OS and the other for DATA like Music, Photos, Downloaded Content, etc. believe it or not i actually have never yet to set up RAID. i know what it's for but i just never got into it.

Yeah, I got a brand new 320GB Spinpoint F1 for a system disk and I've got no complaints this far. I'm sure the 1TB ones are good as well...

thats a good point.
u can allso install sata drivers in windows before making the image clone. I had this problem once when i was trying to clone ide hdd with xp to sata drive.

get two WDC's from newegg for 54.99 ea free ship.

I would personally just get a 1tb hdd or two 500gb in raid 0 and use that 80 gig for OS.

well, been thinking and i could just keep these two HDDs in there place and buy the 1TB drive but what are the chances of it going out? what causes HDDs to go bad anyways? i know like physical stuff from dust and what not but DATA writing use? come on.

EDIT: also the reason why i am decided on two is...

1. Data Transfers and loading times will be a little faster and be able to store more
2. Will be able to install more games on the 250GB HDD vs only like 5 on the 80GB
