WOW. 55c drop with Duorb on 4850

I really, can't believe it myself! Very slightly voltage bumped 4850 512MB went from 67 idle, 106 degress full load to 36 idle, 51 degrees with a Duorb. Super easy install, I used AS5 on the RAM sinks too although they aren't pushed any higher (1100 already). Stable overclock went from 675 to 725 on the core. Not bad for $30!

Is this big of a drop unusual? I mean, could it be the stock Visiontek cooler was that much pure a$$? BTW, that was with stock fan 100% too!

yeah, stock (reference) coolers suck, mostly the single slot type though.

Yup, pretty normal. That's why i got a gigabyte - they have the zelman cooler. currently running at a cool 40C idle. 60C load stable overclock is about 730 - although i just run it at 700 most of the time as my monitor is only 19" and see no real gains.

Reference HD4850 coolers do let the chip run very hot.
Also make the rest of my system run a fair bit hotter than when I had my 8800GT.
Still without a doubt it runs like a champ.

Well, I guess I didn't realize just how lousy the stock single slot was. Now I will probably reflash the BIOS for as high a voltage I can go (1.16 I believe) without having to pencil mod. With temps this low it's just too tempting to see what she can do!

Yeah, the 4850's do benefit from aftermarket cooling. If not temps then noise.

I'll be replacing my Zalman VF-900 which came with my card with a Scythe Musashi when it gets here from the states.

Wow... if that's accurate then seriously, that's one fine reference cooler! I am curious what a Duorb would do on yours! I have an Antec 900 with most of the fans going (including adjustable side 120mm fan blowing right on it) so I know it's not lack of air flow... I am starting to wonder what temp difference would have been just trying stock cooler with AS5... hmmm. But too late now. I am too happy to worry about it. I have incredibly good temps and low noise. No more whiney fan that was too annoying to do anything other than game with the volume up. Now I Fold 24/7 with the GPU version of the software and it runs 43-45 degrees with a consistant 65-80%+ GPU load... Really, I did my research for months (I got this thing before it was even officially launched) and read reviews and I didn't see THIS big of a temperature drop. Obviously something isn't quite right with the stock cooler (too thick of thermal tape for one). All-in-all, SOOOO glad I made this investment!

I did some light mods to it- replaced the stock TIM with Arctic Silver Ceramique, did a small modification to the fins and shroud to make it silent at up to now 65% fanspeed. (under 25db)
If I were to ever have to RMA it, it would still go through, thats how minute the mods are.
edit- to tell you what I did, maybe it could be useful to others...
1. Soften the edges of the fins, don't let them restrict air, sharpen them like a knife. lol.
2. The shroud just needs a small cut to make the intake a little bigger. ;-)

Yeah 100+degC is on the high side.
Mine will average around 95degC and idles around 80degC.
I own a HD4850 our of luck.
Before I used to own a XFX 8800GT XXX VF830 and RMA 3 of them due to faults.
The last 8800GT died just before the HD4850s came out so I swapped for one of those.

I've got the same card and I can only push as far as 730 on the core too, maybe that's about max on the standard voltage for this card. I can't overclock the memory any more than ~20MHz either. I'm going to fit some heatsinks to the RAM and see if that helps.

Have you found anyway to make the VF830 quieter? Mine is quite load and it seems that there's no fan control.

If you don't mind losing your warranty, you can do what I did. Simply run the fan off a fan controller. The warranty part only just comes in if you have to cut off the connector and solder on another plug.

I agree, Its a nice cooler. I use it on my 8800GTS 512. Keeps the temps below 50c and thats oc'd to 750Mhz/2100Mhz mem. Also very quite for a dual fan solution.

Yeah unfortunately there is no fan control on the VF830 versions of 8800GTs.
And there nothing on the PCB which lets you have fan control.
Personally I think they were a gimmick as I did notice my ld VF830 was cheaper then than the stock which had fan control yet the version with fan control came out earlier than the VF830.
Something about nVidia wanting to make a cheaper version of the card but not letting the public know about the lack of fan control with the certain models..

There were a fair few different models of 8800GT of the same specs from XFX, some of them did have fan control some of them did not.
It was up to the distributor to let you know if the card had fan control or not.

I have a duorb on my hd 4850 hooked up to my fan controller, I can keep it at it's lowest speed and it will not break 60c even when under load. I'm gonna put one on my 4830 too because that thing is loud even at 20% fan speed it's really loud.

Yes, but you will need 2 of them. I saw it done on another forum. But you would end up paying $60 more for the coolers. You should crank up the fan speed in ATI control panel to 40% or so.

Pushed it to 100% and it was loud like my bro is screaming or something. But temps were incredible. 40C idle 76C load. Guess I wouldn't buy a duorb afterall.

It looks just like that, but it's the 512mb version (HD4850) Memory will go upto almost 1200 and GPU will bench at 740. (stock is 625/993)
I rarely run it at those high clocks tho as my monitor only goes upto 1440 so i get good fps at the low res.

your fan speed should be at least 50-60% spearman. A duorb would not fit.

I bought an Asus 4850 a day or two after they were launched in the UK.

Took it home, installed it and saw idle temps of 78c. Went back and picked up an Accelero S1 Rev2 and slapped it on, along with a very quiet 140mm fan. Put Zalman ramsinks of the RAM and VRM chips.

Has run quiet and stable @ 700/1100 to this day with idle temps of 28c and load temps of 43c.

Great card.


It's better than even the latest cards that come with aftermarket cooling. And I know the heatsink is mounted well because I saw it with my own eyes.

A screaming loud 40/76 isn't bad as far as temps but I went from 68/106 at a screaming 100% fan speed to 36/61 quieter than my case fans for $30... I feel better about my Duorb as a purchase than just about any other upgrade I have made in 12+ years of enthusiast computing...

I'm not surprised at your experience, the Duorb is a great cooler. The stock cooler is garbage.

One thing's for sure, your card will run at maximum efficiency now that it's cooled properly.
