chill a pelt

So I got this old drinking fountain with a refrigeration unit on top. I tore it down to the compressor and coils and am getting insane temps with it. *testing on a old pent 4@2.5 gig.
I have one of the largest pelts available lying around and have always heard that the colder you can get the hot side the colder the cold side gets... (I get frost from the air on normal liquid cooling with this) Before I blow this sucka up experimenting... The question is will it get even colder running chilled water across the top? I am having problems with the water freezing in the coils on the chiller so will have to go to antifreeze since I disabled the temp sensor on the vapor unit... The pelt already froze the moisture in the air on mere liquid cooling... Also some insulation advice from some experienced sub zero OCers would help.
With this unit I can deliver freezing temps 24/7 so I will need mass insulation. I am a newb at sub zero. Also will my pump handle the cold?...

Well I have bench tested this baby now and all seems well. I had to thaw it out for 3 hours before I could get the liquid loop to run again since I filled all voids with insulation and it seems the chill lasts for hours after shutting it down. *remember that liquid does not freeze at 0 if you keep it moving* So I started up my pumps and powered up the pelt... As of now the pelt is so cold that if I touch it my finger sticks and I spit on it and it froze solid bubbles and all "Yea kinda gross" I will hook it up to the p-4 in a bit for BIOS temps then shut it down as it is gonna create some hella moisture when it thaws... It is time for some innovative insulation and some time and a lil antifreeze and this baby will be ready for my
C2QX to run some benchies.... *Testing on a p-4 2.5 ghz first* I just want some temps to start!!!

Sounds like an interesting ghetto mod. I was going to do the same thing with my H20-220. I am curious to see how cold it actually runs.

Grr ran 3 mins and froze again... It is insane when water on the hot side of a pelt freezes solid... I am adding antifreeze tomorrow. As for now it is in the thaw... It may be ghetto but it is running so cold that I cannot keep it running. I also need to add a cold plate as the pelt is hella fragile.

I believe that alchohol has a lower freezing point than water, try some Jack Daniels as coolant.

i've always wanted to do a mod with a Peltier (TEC). i'd put the TEC not directly onto the CPU, but rather stick it onto another CPU block with a fan on the hot side, this whole assembly is put into the loop. that way the water gets cold rather than one part of the loop.

Well I am not all that impressed as of yet. The temps drop to 9c before the loop freezes I have pics I'll post later. I will try this using antifreeze and without the pelt also and see what results I get.

The problem is that to properly remove the heat from a TEC a you need a minimum of liquid if you are cooling a CPU. I have tried cooling TEC's with a heatsink and the temps get real bad under load because the heatsink cannot keep up. Maybe if someone tried a Zalaman...

Just pop some antifreeze or alcohol in there, it won't freeze up then. I am impressed that you are freezing the hot side on the plate.

Soooo I hit 14c without the pelt with %50 alchahol before it freezes in 4 minutes...
Andddd I hit 8c with the pelt before it froze after 4 mins...
I know it would hit sub zero if I could keep it from freezing...
I am wondering if the pelt will even be neccesary after I stop the freezing...

what if you made the loop cool the TEC itself: take my orginal idea of using the TEC to cool the liquid in the loop down rather than just the CPU? if you could also loop this to the hotter side, you'd have in effect a self-cooling loop. ok, you would reach an equilibrium in temps as the loop finds the balance point but in theory you should get cooler than room temp

well ok, it might freeze it, but we're getting to the right goal, aren't we? add in anti-freeze or use 100% (absolute) ethanol (alcohol) and it won't freeze.

The loop is cooling the TEC. The loop is a Phase change powered liquid chiller that keeps freezing solid. I will buy some antifreeze tonight and finish this. Then it is time to insulate my 780i
