Which DVD burner?

My 18 month old Samsung DVD drive has just kicked the bucket. I'm looking for a reliable drive that'll last a long time. I've heard Pioneer do good drives and I've found this one:

My budget is £17 and I was wondering if there's any better I can get for this? Does anyone here have any good/bad experiences with Pioneer drives, or this one in particular?

Asus drives are made by pioneer, thats why I boguht it

Really quiet and fast, been my best drive yet.

Pioneers are generally the high end ones, so if you've got the cash then go for one.

I've had the same Samsung for 2 years with no issues.

Pioneer is kinda the (to put a british way) dogs bollocks, when it comes to Optical Drives. They are so much quieter and better quality. I used optiarc on a build for a relative to try and save a few quid, wish I hadnt, the plastic looks cheap, the design looks cheap, and its really loud!

I have a broken samy, which is black. How hard is it to change the white face plate to black plate from samy? will it fit?

If the button on both drives is the same size/location, then it may fit. Why not just get a black drive and save the possibility of it not fitting?

You should see if there is a firmware modder like this one http://club.cdfreaks.com/f105/patch-utility-samsung-mtk-based-dvd-writers-v3-4-5-new-242508/ for the drive you ordered. The price, access time, and those firmware mods are the main reason I stick with samsung but they have firmware mods for other brands too.

unfortunately they don't have black bezel Pioneers. And more over I had a $10 gift card. So my final price was $10 only

I have an Optiarc(i think it's a joint-venture between Sony and NEC) in my laptop. It's 2 years old now and is great. It's a little noisy, but not that bad.

My old desktop has a TEAC drive that's now 4 years old. Also working like a charm.

I have an LG and a LiteOn, and both are great. Have had the LiteOn for 4 years. At one point the tray was getting stuck, which is why I got the LG, but then it just stopped getting stuck. So now I have 2 perfectly good ones, both are over 2 years old.

Have you though of maybe going for a Blu-Ray player + DVD x16 burner? Newegg has some pretty good prices on some.

Too me your paying $25 bucks for the burner and you can't find a Blu-Ray player at Walmart for another $75 bucks so it just seems like a pretty good deal.
