New Seagate Firmware Turns Sour, Dangerous

7200.10s were great. 11s have really hurt Seagate.

I have nine 320GB Seagates and a 250GB, all the 7200.10 models. They have never given me an issue. Some are even refurbs and worked fine for over a year since I bought them.

I don't have anything against them but... were I work I used to see equal numbers of WD vs Seagate fail. EXCEPT for the new 7200.11s. I have seen MANY of those fail and right now WD is where I would go.

Seagate owns Maxtor and yes they are affected.

I would like to note here... Seagate is not a bad company, and they will build a good product again without any doubt.
A few years back WD had big issues with their SE16 line, WD and Seagate have fought back and forth for the best drives
for many years, both companies enterprise line has generally always stayed in high respect, especially the SCSI drives.

Yikes. Looks like a big headache for Seagate and many of their customers.

Glad I went with Western Digital as usual. Haven't been let down yet.

Ouch.
Makes me feel luckey, as i've just recently picked up the WD6400AAKS instead of the Seagate ST3500320AS.. i had a hunch of sorts, dunno :eek:

Every now and then a company has a flowed product line. its a bummer when it comes to HDs filled with all your nice pr0n idol's work, but thats life.

BACKUP YOUR DATA GUYS.

I've had one of the listed drives for almost a year. I've had no issues with it. Thought about installing the new firmware until I heard more info about it. Guess I'll leave it to be.

The number of drives affected is actually pretty small. I'm more glad that they are finally admitting it and issuing fixes. The problem has been well known for a good while, though I think there might be a lot of people updating their firmware that don't even need to, especially with the firmware being made available for download via other sources than seagate.

It is already risky enough to apply firmware fixes to HDDs, it is something that is never supposed to be done by the end user. However, in this case, I think it was the best solution. However, I think there are a lot of people that are updating that don't need to.

shrugs I have a 7200.11, its been great for me.

I also have a WD hdd in my computer which also works great.
I think its just a once off thing seagate will address this issue.

Seems to work for the guys who did v1 and v2 to get the bricks.At least Seagate is trying....unlike IBM a few years back.......

I just did my hard drive ,No problems during flash or after works like it should.

How did you know that the firmware on the web is the v3 and is right to update now?
The name of the file that I just download now is "MooseDT-SD1A-2D-8-16-32MB.ISO"

Hopefully this will work! I have the st3500320as drive as well, and downloaded the firmware update before it was taken down, but for some reason, it would not allow me to update the drive? It kept telling me, that it was the wrong drive, even though I checked several times LOL. Now my firmware is revision SD15, and that was supposed to be one of the affected drives.
Anyhow, you updated your firmware, and all is well, correct? And that is still the SD1A firmware? I thought that was the bad firmware? But I see that your saying it is v.3.

yes they redid it too stop the bricks.I did mine yesterday and have my Xp install on the drive no problems,Just re download the file for your drive,it seems to work on all ST3500320AS drives,One guy on the Seagate forums had a -505 model flash with out problems.

Also took your advice H82, and downloaded the NEW update, and flashed the drive with the new firmware, and all is good man!!! Thanks for reassuring me on that one
