Processor 2500k
Motherboard Maximus IV Extreme
Cooling Corsair A50
Memory Samsung 2x4gb DDR3
Video Card(s) Unlocked PNY 465 ( 470 )
Power Supply OCZ Modxtreme 600w
System Specs:
CPU: Phenom 2 920
MB: MSI Dka790gx
RAM: G-skill x2 2gig ddr2-1066
PSU: 630w raidmax power supply
VIDEO: AMD EAH3450 HD 256mb
OS: Windows 7

So i'm relatively new to OCing and i've been attempting to raise my phenom 2 as high as it can go on stock cooling. my current settings are:
CPU:
7x HT multiplier
240 HT ref
1.6 CPU voltage (?)
RAM:
480 mhz
1:2 divider
5-5-5-15-24 2T
2v

I'm assuming that the one labeled CPU voltage in the bios is the cpu core but cpu-z isn't showing any increase. Currently this setup is "stable" enough for me to surf the net / play some games but it crashes after ~45min under stress in everest. Which obviously means that my setup is messed up somewhere but i'm at a loss as to where. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks

That voltage is way to high. You should push your FSB with everything auto/stock until it crashes and you can't run PI and other tests.

Bump up the voltage a notch do all over again. Bump up a notch and do all over again.

Continue to watch your temps all along.

Then you will find your max straight FSB and then you can start messing more with the HT and other factors like memory and gpu.

Good luck.

Well the first mistake was to buy a raidmix psu, second is to buy a 920. Locked multi's are hard to oc amd's (most of the time). 1.6V for 45nm will kill that cpu in 2months or so. 1.45V is the absolute maximum safe volts, start pushing FSB, when unstable add a bit of nb volt's.

You are wrong here. Phenom II chips will handle 1.55v easy long term. They aren't even out of spec until +1.5v. Please make sure you know your facts before posting information.

That may be too high for 24/7, considering we don't really know how electron migration effects these chips. I'm fairly confident that 1.55v is fine though.

You should have no problems overclocking your processor using the HT Bus speed. I'm not certain how far your board will allow you to go on the HT Bus, but it should be a pretty healthy number for sure. So far on my older SB600 board (ASUS M3A32 MVP-Deluxe) I've already gone up to 372Mhz HT Bus before I gave up testing. For sure it could go higher but you'll run into multiplier issues likely not having low enough multi's for things like the HT Link and Northbridge and maybe RAM.

It would be a good idea and always the first step to set the processor voltage to stock (1.344v), turn off CPU Tweak, drop your memory speed to a level enough that you won't run into ram issues. Then start blasting up on the HT Bus speed and see where it takes you. After you find that limit then you can continue on.

Oops sorry i meant 1.4v =\ anyways i bumped up to 1.45v core and at 245 fsb i'm lasting less than an hour on everest stress before it reboots. i was stable at 230 fsb and 1.4v though. Should i drop my ram's speed? i know it can run up to 533 mhz and i'm at 490...

pop over to this forum http://www.gskill.us/forum/ and do some timing's research on your model of ram and make sure to read the above post's clearly! (ignore spearman914's post though)

tbh im not a fan of MSI boards! and everyday i try to overclock im starting to hate ASUS aswell!!!!

DFI AM3+ Motherboards FTW

FYI. or just stay here and listen to the genious's of TPU

bump of the ram voltage, as with the HT voltage and NB voltage. Your 920 will overclock just fine, most people are getting it to around 3.6 and above.

Hmm so i seem to be stable at 230 FSB on default settings. Which leads me to beleive that its not my cpu thats causing the restarts at 240+ FSB in everest...

it could be your htt volts, or your nb volts, or mem volt or timings...
what those set at?

i've basically left all volts the same except for cpu core and ram so i guess i'll start bumping those and see if that does it

EDIT: wait now that i think about it its done that when i dropped the ht link and cpu-nb to 7x as well and its not the ram cause i usually keep it under 900mhz
