Sony-Optiarc, a subsidiary of Sony, is preparing the new AD-7240S DVD-Writer drive that is built to write DVDs at 24X. The drive rivals Lite-On, which is already out with a drive that burns DVDs this fast. The drive has a standard-sized internal form factor, and uses the SATA interface. It features adaptive self-tuning and burns media at the following speeds: Up to 24X for single-layer DVD-R/+R; 12X for dual-layer DVD-R/+R, DVD-RAM, and DVD-R9; 48X and 32X for CD writing and re-writing respectively. The drive will reach retail by next month.

this is just show for show off. I don't think there's even media good enough for 22x burning.
there are discs that will go to 20x but not beyond that.
so why up the speed of burners where there's isn't media for that speed.
and with blu-ray burner and media becoming more affordable, there's no point with this dvd burners speed competition.

I think there isn't any blank 24x DVDs out yet because there isn't a 24x burner and it would be a waste of money for the consumer. As soon as it's out I bet there will be 24x DVDs available. Decent DVD-R also support "overspeeding" for example I have some Taiyo Yuden disks that are 16x but burn fine at 20x.

Uhh, I struggle to find discs that are over 16X. I've had a drive that can do over 20x burning for years now but I've never been able to burn a disc at over 16x.

It doesn't matter much to me though because it's very rare that I burn a disc, and that extra minute a 16x will take over a 20x or what ever doesn't bother me because of how little I burn discs.

My first burner was 2X (CD Only!) No rewrite! cost me 675$. One blank CD cost 25$.

When you'd start burning one of these, it took close to an hour on Win95 and you'd pray that it would finish or

I don't even know why this is neccesary. I for one hate getting coasters so even though my drive capable of 18x i only burn at 12x. Its quicker to burn once slower than fullspeed twice :D

I'm willing to bet that the 24x is perfectly compatible with 20x media. The only reason the media doesn't say any higher is because that technology didn't exist.

I think optiarc has NEC interior. (sorry, if it isn't the correct word here)

no. it hasn't. when the Nec-sony joint venture started sony replaced nec's optics with their own. sony's optics are Crap. i had one optiarc and in 2 weeks it stopped recognizing everything (dvds, cds, it didn't even recognize a genuine windows cd, also it reported an error when i tried to update the firmware). the drive was brand new and after 2 weeks it went bye-bye.

Ive put some of these Sony - optiarc, or some drive that had that similar name anyway, it was the newer model up from mine< and i found them not as good, quality was down, and they have issues reading a few Discs/DVD's and there noisey, id go back to the one i use now, its brillant. I only burn all my whatevers as slow as possible (1x MAX 8x), so this new speed is like meh to me. As i have found errors at higher speed. LG drives are ok, but depends on the one you get, older models are better, and same with Lite-On, Samsung i would never buy one, ALL the samsung drives have died, or near dead, the tray stops working, or there is loose parts flotting around inside, i just found them horrible, and im not talking about 1 or 2 i mean lots :shadedshu

I find my Pioneer DVR-212D 18x fine, I use verbatim disc's with it and usually burn 8x, although, some data discs burn fine at 16x no problems and no errors.
