Yup, which would reduce the benefits but there would still be some benefits, but not IMO worthy of the costs. Many reviews have stated that to get the best out of an overclocked 280 you need a decent CPU running at 3.6gig, anything less and there is some degree of bottleneck.

Thats what I thought. A 4870 is plenty fast enough for ANYTHING out there right now. If anything I would save up for a new CPU or do some RAID 0.

FYI I have nothing against Nvidia its just your current setup is plenty fast but could use some "upgrades" else where other than your GPU.

Now that i have seen his CPU, i would have to agree with above, at least a Q6600 should do you some good, as the 4870 should definitively last as of now and a few more years, the E6600 is really faded out as of now(not saying its a bad CPU, hell my QX6700 is as old), but a nice CPU upgrade paired with that 4870 should really pull that vid card up, and the upgrade will help in more CPU intensive situations.

4870's arent really better with AA imo, i moved from 4870CF to a single GTX260 and enjoyed the experience ALOT more, and played everything with 4-8X AA or even 16x no probs.

my 2x4870's together played the games at the same settings, had slightly better avg fps, higher max fps, and lower min fps.

I think, as it's a decent PSU then it might, but to be honest you are fairly borderline, personally I would Fleabay it and go for a reasonable 650, maybe a Corsair 620 upwards.

The 285 is a good upgrade as long as his able to sell off his 4870 and add the cash to his new 285. Otherwise if his just giving his 4870 to a friend or family member then it would kill his price/performance ratio, he may as well buy a gtx295 if that is the case but otherwise its a good buy.

Anyways a corsair hx620watt, there's a few threads about it if you search it in google because apparently you can even crossfire 4870x2's on them with a q9550 or something. I would think a corsair 520watt would be adequate.

I doubt he will see any increase at all thats worth the money hes going to invest. Hes already bottlenecked. The new GPU will just make it worse.

Hmmm true I didn't really take his board or CPU into consideration, I automatically assumed he overclocked.

Its takes my q6600 @3.4ghz to take off bottleneck from 2 4850's, gonna need alot more CPU power for a 285.

In order to answer that fully, we need all your specs, motherboard, memory etc. it's difficult to recommend a CPU replacement for example if we dont know what your motherboard is to see the compatibility.
