I'm running Prime95 and everest is giving me core temps of:

Core#1: 81
Core#2: 79
Core#3: 76
Core#4: 76

My system is stock with no overclocking at all. These temps seam like they are rather high for stock. Any ideas?

My system: Intel Q9550, 4Gig Mushkin ram, BFG Nvidia OC GTX 280, OCZ 700W PS, 640GB WD HD

1. You need to reseat your heatsink.

OR

2. A fan is not moving or not plugged in somewhere.

Stock Cooling? Have you reseated the heatsink without reapplying TIM? Is there dust involved? Do you have enough airflow in your case? Do you live in the desert, where such temps are normal?

Depending on what your gonna do with it, that should be fine. For normal use and even extreme gaming, you will NEVER reach those temps.

They dont look too high for stock cooling, you should idle on about 30*C right?

Just obviously dont OC without buying a new cooler.

I just checked and all four case fans along with the PSU and CPU fan are spinning. When I put my heatsink onto the CPU, I just used the standard heatsink along with the silver glob of paste all ready attached to the heatsink. Figured I couldn't go to wrong there but any thing must be possible.

Then most likey the LGA775 heatsink isn't secured 100%.

Trust me it happens to all of us depending on how many we install.

You push them in diagonally from each other and twist the tops of the pegs to slide lock it down. Sometimes it takes a few tries and they still pop out. Its frustrating but it happens to the best of us. ;)

That has to be it from your description.

I had a pentium D at 114 degrees before from it. Its pretty bad considering I was using a fancy Scythe cooler at the time.

All four cores are reading 48c at idle (well I'm using ie). Could it be that Everest ultimate edition is reading wrong? Is there a better program to give me core temps? And no, I'm not in the desert nor do I have a heat lamp shining on the computer.

He said he just used the standard cooler with the pre-applied paste.

Temps look fine to me. Running Prime 95 with a Quad Core CPU @ 2.83 Ghz with one of these sat on top:

Its inevitable you will reach at least 70*C

@ jasonmac73, what are your idle and ambient temps?

EDIT:

Hmm, after seeing idle is 48*C, something is wrong. I agree that the push pins arent all the way in. They do require considerable force, and everyone must click. You can tell if it is in or not by gently pulling back at the pin and it shouldnt come out.

normally i would say OK... but the idle temps are nuts and that is a 45nm quad. should be colder.

I will check the mounts. I did insert them diagonally. I thought you only twist them to remove them.

I didn't add the thermal paste, it was the preapplied paste that came on the heatsink. I did remove the sink right after I put it on to move a wire that got caught but I replaced it right away before starting the system.

Don't use Everest, use RealTemp. I bet it will report your temperatures lower. In Everest, my cores are 50c idle which is definitely incorrect 'cause in RealTemp and CoreTemp, I'm 38-40C idle.

Yeah, the Intel stock cooler is a bitch to put on, i bent my mobo by using so much force, it's ridiculous. Then I found out I put it on the wrong way so the wire is too short to wrap around the fan and plug in, I'm not gonna retry it lol.

I will pull the sink off tonight and reseat it. I do have a tube of artic silver. What would be a good after market heatsink and fan of comparable size? I do not have enough room to add one that is much bigger.

I'm still running hot (same temps, 81, 79, 76, 76)after taking the heatsink off, scraping the old paste, smoothing the top and bottom of the CPU and heatsink, putting a thin layer of artic silver, and ensured that no wires are in the way of the CPU fan. I double checked to ensure the heatsink is mounted properly on all four corners. What gives???????

That is way to hot, but the stock intel cooler that comes with the 45nm quads sucks. Try going into your BIOS and forcing the fan to run at 100% at all times.

I'll give that a try but shouldn't the fan be at 100% 20 minutes into the prime95 when I'm hitting 81c on the cores?

Not always. It depends on where the motherboard's BIOS has the fan speed settings. Some boards never raise the speed past 75% when set to automatic.

Yep twist to remove, you just push them with it's stock position. It's in the installation manual too. DaedalusHelios must have left them untwisted last time he removed the heatsink?

a trick I use for installing the 775 & 1366 socket heatsink & fan, is to use the foam that comes with your motherboard. I build alot of PC so I have alot of the foam lying around. I use 3 or 4 of the foam sheets from those motherboards and put it on a flat surface and just push until they are secure. this works for me, so I hope this helps.:nutkick:

Nice idea X-Terminator. I usually use the motherboard box corner for mounting. That gets through 3/4 of the pins leaving one harder to stick in.

I reseated the heatsink last night and used artic silver compound. I'm still running the same temps except all four regist about 1 degree lower. I'm going to change the heatsink and fan. Does anyone have a recommendationfor a good one. I'm not looking to spend an entire lot.
