I do not believe that tape will save thbe day. It's barely 0.25 mm thick!

That's why you keep adding tape until it's the thickness of the core.

Nice find Mark.

The more important part is the beginning where it tells how delicate the core is....

So...should I do it since I can get support for the core, or is my Big Typhoon still to heavy?

I wouldnt trust masking tape next to a hot cpu core.

I think if you have to ask you probably should NOT do it. Its ur only CPU and you dont even have a Job to get another. If you mess it up (its possible) you end up with nothing.

The reason I posted a link to that article is because it tells you how fragile the cores are.

And the Athlon XP die was stronger than the A64 die. I have a dead AXP2500 in a drawer that doesnt work due to a small chip off the edge.

I wouldnt trust tape either.... bare core + big typhoon... not a good idea period. If I were you I would remove the IHS, put as5 on the inside, lap the inside, superglue it back on, then lap the outside. Your temps will be almost, but not quite as good as a naked processor.

Yeah... I had an athlon xp that looked just like that, and still worked great. I also have a venice that has a teeny chip in it, and doesnt work at all.

Can I remove the IHS, replace the crappy thermal paste with AS5, then put it back on with superglue, like what POGE said. Would that be fine and safe?

Mark, if you found a capacitor you could soldier back on there your 3700 would still work. :D

Edit: what I said will be much safer than trying to put your typhoon on it... -_-

me and my friends have attempted alot of ihs removals, the best way was to press the cpu into a vegetable ( dont know what they called in english ) they usually recommend you stick it in a piece of soft material but, we tryed that and some pins got bent, squeeze the cpu gently into a soft vegetable, use a razorblade when cutting the ihs of and dry the cpu with a hair dyer afterwards, and yes im not crazy even if it sounds like that :)
