Okay,

I've been thinking about upgrading my 4850's to a 4870x2, and I had a question about my power supply. I currently have a PC Power & Cooling Silencer 610, and am not sure if it would be able to handle the load. I have the proper number connections, and I really doubt that a monster PSU would be necessary. What do y'all think?

Both the PC Power and Cooling 610, and Corsair 550W will handle a 4870 X2 no problems.

They are very good PSU's.

no choose anything above 600 cos if you want to upgrade, there's more room...but a 550 can handle it...

The standard recommendation for a single 4870 x2 is at least 550W. The card at load can use over 450W by itself though, so if you have a 140W cpu, or like to overclock, I would go at least 650W. I have a 650W powering my mobo, cpu, and 4870 x2 and then a 550W powering everything else (Antec Neolink 1200W). Also make sure the PSU can push enough Amps. I called Sapphire for the specs and a stock 4870 x2 uses supposedly around 16A at idle, and 36A loaded.

Hope that helps!

Most manufacturers state that the HD4870x2 requires a minimum 650W power supply. Examples of most.... XFX, Palit, HIS, Gainward, not checked any more!

Go for a PSU that has little or alot more than you need rather than 'just enough'.

Silverstone Decathlon 650:

http://www.silverstonetek.com/products/p_contents.php?pno=da650&area=

-Ample wattage, with sufficient head room
-Single 12v rail
-Modular
-8pin PCI-E native
-Jap caps
-80+% efficiency

And as always, you're getting Tier 1 PSU quality with Silverstone.

The price is fine as well; a lot better than all the gimmick 'gamer' PSUs with their special LEDs floating around out there.

I had an Antec NeoPower 550 and it was unstable with my 4870x2. It really depends on how many peripherals you have in your rig. After I got my PC Power and Cooling 750w all my problems were solved.
