Hey there,

So I finally seem to have my 4850x2 running stable without any system reboots or anything, but I'm wondering whether or not the FPS I experience in various games is lower than what is expected. I know that I probably have some bottlenecks in my setup, which might be affecting it.

In Fallout 3 with every setting maximized except for AA @ 4x and resolution @ 1920x1200 (VS Off to see max fps) FRAPS reports my FPS outside is usually around 40ish outside of Megaton and slightly above 60 inside of Megaton.

In Farcry 2 with everything set to ULTRA on 1920x1200 with 4x AA I get about 30-45FPS average, it doesn't seem to drop below 30 hardly at all, but when it does no discernable visual lag is noticed.

I was comparing these results to a few reviews namely this one (http://www.cluboc.net/reviews/video/sapphire/hd4850x2/page5.asp) in which they seem to be getting higher FPS overall. Referring back to Farcry 2 I can barely get 20-25fps with 8x AA and all of the previous settings whereas the reviewer supposedly gets results in the 40's.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

One further note is that my motherboard is a P5K Deluxe (supposedly PCI-E 1.1) although GPU-Z reports my PCI-E bandwidth as 2.0? Perhaps it isn't reporting properly.

Benchmark Scores They're pretty good, nothing crazy.
You're using the internal benchmarking software that comes with farcry 2? or are you recording in game FPS, because those values will be different.

Also post a 3dmark vantage run if you can... if your more than a thousand points off the 4850X2 review values, you may have a driver issue.

What driver version are you using?

See I really wish I could run vantage, but 'Catalyst 9.2' has a driver conflict with vantage which causes extreme water artifacts the second it starts. It seems to be a known driver related bug.

Also I have run 'Farcry 2 Benchmark Tool' as well as observed ingame FPS, both of which are fairly consistent except to say that the benching tool seems to cause the FPS to dip slighly below what I have experienced ingame thus far.

To restate I am using the Catalyst 9.2 drivers.

One other note; when I first installed the card I experienced instability in that my computer would crash (depending on the game) after a few minutes causing my computer to reboot. I resolved this by disabling the 'Catalyst AI' setting which seemed to fix it. Something I tried prior to that which seemed to fix it was disabling crossfire, but that obviously caused the second GPU to become disabled. It took me some time and reading to come to the conclusion that disabling the 'Catalyst AI' seemed to fix it.

IMO its one of these (in order of likelihood):

1. A borked set of drivers/sub-optimal driver settings in CCC...
2. Cpu bottlenecking (they have a 4ghz dualcore w/ 6mb cache... which is faster for games than a 3.2ghz quad.)
3. not enough juice to the card.

EDIT... after checking specs on your PS the order has changed

Things look pretty good to me.:) In that review they are using a 4ghz dual core while you are using a quad at 3.2ghz. In games the 4ghz dual will result in better FPS.

Hmm, that's too bad then. I guess the one thing that was confusing me is that I swear that I recall reading that people were getting 100+ fps in Fallout 3 using identical game settings as mine whereas I experience significantly lower FPS.

One other thing that may or may not be relevant... I noticed during games that while the primary GPU gets to 60-65C the secondary GPU is always around 50-54C max, is this to be expected?

Also; thankyou for your replies erocker and phanbuey.

maybe it is the fact that your mobo is PCI-e 1.1 ... anyone know if it would affect him?

Tests that I have read usually indicate a small (~10%) decrease in performance due to PCI-E 1.1 bandwidth limitations.

I have 2 of them so tomorrow we'll see what kind of numbers the ycan put up, it would suck if it won't run vantage.

Ok I finally confirmed my suspicions that my perfromance is signficantly lower than it should be. I loaded up L4D with a friend of mine, same settings, and when we'd look at similar things his FPS would be almost as much as 50fps or more using a single 512mb 4870. I uninstalled my drivers and reinstalled them and I went from getting 60-100fps in L4D (on max settings) to getting 250-300fps. After playing the game for a short period it rebooted against as with my initial problem.

I have come to two conclusions, the 4850x2 works fine when crossfire is diabled and/or when Catalyst AI is disabled. The interesting thing is that doing either has the same affect on the FPS (seems to show the results of a single 4850 now a 4850x2). However, when crossfire is enabled and catalyst AI is on the FPS increase is almost 200% except the computer will reboot after a period. Another friend of mine has the same identical card (4850x2) but he is running 64 bit vista. In 64bit vista the second core cannot be enabled ( crossfire automatically set to off) and any attempt to enable crossfire causes the system to hang. I'm nearly convinced this is driver related (unless we both somehow have bad cards) and I'm trying ot install the 8.12 hotfix drivers to test this. Another test I'd like to try is seeing if Oil's MS link to that hotfix has any affect either positive or negative.

Ok, sorry for all the thread spamming, but just constantly updating with all this testing I'm trying.

I've formatted my computer and installed windows XP to try and eliminate problems, but my computer would run a game for a few seconds and than go to a black screen and then reboot. I've been monitoring the GPU temperature with a few different programs, but the temperature never gets much over 70C. The interesting thing is when I lowered the clocks on the card as low as they can possibly go the system seems to be entirely stable in crossfire mode. To expand upon this I upped the clock speeds in increments until eventually the computer crashed again (still shy of stock speeds). For fun I disabled CCC's overclocking and tried using rivatuner (which I can only get to manipulate one of the cards) and I began overclocking again but this time above stock speeds (on the 1 gpu core, 2nd core was stock speeds). At this point I noticed my system was considerably more stable, however at the last moment I went to exit the game and my computer did crash again.

At this point I'm leaning towards one of two conclusions;
1) The card is overheating due to thermal paste issues or perhaps improperly set heatsinks
2) The higher end speeds cause dips on the PSU rails that fail the computer

I'm definately leaning towards the first since alterations in the cooling situation (putting a large fan next to my open computer case) seems to indefinately extend it's lifespan until I decide to stop playing. I'm wondering if I should just buy some thermal paste, take apart the card and slather it all up, or RMA it.

Any suggestions?

Hey guy, just to let you know a Q6600 needs 3.4ghz to get rid of crossfire bottlenecks from dual 4850's.
With my current system specs I bench crysis 51fps average on DX 9 settings all High, 64bit(To get rid of stutters).

Hope this helps, I've tried it many times and 3.6ghz doesn't do anymore justice than 3.4ghz can.

EDIT: Mine heats up to 70 degrees both cards and up, the only problem i get around 80 - 90 degrees are minor artifacting. Since your computer is shutting down it may have something to do with your RAM, PSU, Overclock or possibly corrupt drivers

I talked with Sapphire's tech today. Initially upon explaining the problem he immediately suggested PSU issues, but when I told him that it was clock dependant he moved to suggest there was a driver conflict or I had a bad card. Given the fact that I had formatted and tried multiple driver configurations in both Vista and XP I opted to RMA the card for the second time. I'll have a third one this upcoming week, so I'll update a thread with how that works when I find out!

I have a 4850X2 along with a Gigabyte EP45 UD3P and things run pretty good except the 4850X2. This card is hotter than all of my video cards I have ever had. I finally added two DD Maze 5s and the cores run at a cool 33C under max load. Pretty nice isn't it? I had a Thermochill PA240 for the CPU and the first core of the GPU. Then I ran the outlet to another Black Ice Pro 120 and then to the second GPU. Helps keep the GPUs at the same temp usually no more than 2C difference.

Problem is the memory is where I have issues. GPU2 (located on the outside edge of the card closest to the power plugs) reaches 180F in Vantage before Vantage aborts with a User Abort error code. Now that's using the existing aluminum spreaders that came with the card. The card is not overclocked...yet, so the stock ram cooler should work. Question is, will I see major improvement by removing the sink and replacing with Swiftech's ram sinks? I also will use the Enzotech version since the space under the water block barbs is extremely tight. I might even have to trim those sinks further to fit.

The issue would be solved if an all-in-one (heh nice name) vga block was available that also cools the mem. I say this because this card is extremely fragile. An all-in-one block would help support the card greatly. Anyway, so far I got 19560 in 3DMark2006 with my Q9650 at 3.6GHz proc. FYI, if this version of the 4850 is considered cool compared to the other 4850 single GPU, how in the world could you even think about overclocking it without it acting as a furnace?
