AMD clarified with press late last week about the immediate future of its line of Radeon HD graphics products, particularly the HD 4870 X2. According to AMD, its partners are now being selected and prepped for validation of its next major part, the HD 4890 X2.

According to reports, the new card will have both GPUs running at least at 1 GHz core clock speed. Depending on the SKU, customers should be seeing 2 GB and 4 GB cards. The specs are not fully confirmed yet, but we'll let you know when we hear anything different.

Previously, AMD stated that there wasn't a real market need for something beyond the HD 4870 X2, since AMD thoroughly felt that its top of the line offering was already leading the competition. Also, as AMD's ultra high-end commands a significant price premium over, the target customer group is relatively small.

As of now, Nvidia's GeForce GTX 295, a dual-GPU product, remains the cream of the crop for Nvidia. With the pending release of AMD's Radeon HD 4890 X2, a follow-up from Nvidia can surely be expected. More to come.

I'd actually be surprised if Nvidia responded to this. It's a bit late in this generation, isn't it?

This should be a very nice card. I wouldn't mind snatching one up if it is under $500.

If I wanted an additional furnace in the house I'd think I'd get a corn burner before this. I just couldn't see paying more than what I do on my electric bill for a marginal performance increase.

Exactly what I was going to mention.. they (ATI) specifically denied making or planning to make this card.

because it's a poor idea corporate wise and could interrupt the hd5800 series' line up. sure it would perform well, but it would make them have to either drop pices on the 4870x2 or drop the card entirely to get the lineup to work. it seems to make much more sense to leave it be and prep for the rv870 instead of dualing a revision card.

I highly doubt this is anywhere near true, and Tom's generally just makes shit up most of the time anyway...

The single core cards can't hit 1GHz without voltage increases, and heat becomes an issue when you do that, I highly doubt they will manage to do it with a dual-gpu card where heat is already a problem.

Hmm, i'm not sure on that as others have stated AMD is denying the need for the card - AMD/ATI's new graphics card philosophy is to have a max price for cards where the 4870x2 is at the moment, and nothing more expensive as it won't sell enough to pay for the development, especially in a recession.

Plus the 5xxx series can't be too far off, maybe a few more months but for amd to bin dual 1ghz+ chips, pair it with 2-4gb of gddr5 and get it all working on a revised x2 size board would cost the heck of a lot and damage 4870x2 sales (if it didn't force a price-drop).

Also off-topic but OP that avatar looks familiar :p

yea I don't see the point of this... 5000 series will be out too soon for this to be necessary. People are still buying the 4800 series and 4870X2's, why make something else? Doesn't make sense

I like how the article mentions that the target group for such a high end card is very small.....( like 5 - 10 people:laugh: )

Nothing I hope. They don't need to make another card. Their 295 is fine for a while yet.

Well, it might be that "April Fools" quad GPU.

That would be awesome if they did do it though. I also did not realize the HD5K series was coming up so soon.

to me it looks like a marketing ploy, they woudl come out with the 4890x2 and NV will be comming out with next gen chips. they will be blown out the water.
But if they spread rumors of a top of line card this late in game, maybe they get NV to hickup.

I think it'll be down to ATi partners that make this card, but then again I dunno. Not a card I'd be buying, one I'll be interested to see how well it performs, but that's about it. Anyroad, more information 'ere.
