The college I am attending (Rose-Hulman) will be requiring me to buy a laptop from them.

Last year's specs were along the lines of:
Proc: P7800
Memory: 4 GB 667
Dedicated Video Card
and some other nice stuff

If this year's model comes with a 5400 rpm hard drive, how much of a performance difference (in boot time, start up time for programs, web browsing) will there be if I throw in a 7200 rpm drive? Solid state?

minutes to seconds, depending on the operating system. It would definitely be noticeable from the jump to 7200.
