I almost say spend 200 on a GOOD PSU and don't look back.

I don't know HOW MANY PSUs I have simply blown because I went cheap.

<<<----That PSU has SMOKED HARDWARE(literately) and lived to tell about it, and in fact is still kicking.

Why would I want to skimp on a PSU that could fry every part in my machine if it went out? The stuff adds up real quick!

I also say buy the 1k PSU because it eats less electricity. Just because you have a 1k PSU does not mean that it's draining all that power. It eats what you use.

I generally stick with 700w+ psus with active PFC. Several good ones can be had for under $150. Just know who made your PSU...not just the company marketing it.

You're gonna need to spend 100$ on one anyway, why not drop an extra 20$ for a great one?

That's how I feel about this subject. If for a extra $20 you could get a higher powered corsair or seasonic that will last alot longer, why not spend the $20. Also, price dont have alot to do with quality from what I've noticed about PSU's. I can get a 750 corsair for alot less money than I spent on my CM 750 watt psu, and the corsair is ALOT better PSU(I got the CM before I knew about it's quality rating compared to other PSUs). As for wattage, I don't recommend +700 watts unless someone is planning SLI or X-fire. I normally suggest a corsair 620(one of THE best PSU avaialble) or 650 depending on which is less expensive.

Yea, the HX series are great...

BUT there are some mid quality REAL cheap these days... like an OK 500W for like 30$

I would never think of replacing the PSUs i have for anything less, 1.2KW is something unique since you know that you will never run out of power :)

I think the specs to look for are well documented here. The obsession with psus is because the PSU IS the foundation to your system. That cannot be stressed enough. No other component in your system has more of an impact on stability, nor is there any other component that can kill your computer like a bad PSU. For this reason, people are obsessive. Are people dramatic about it? Possibly. The reason for this is because there have been way too many posts where people are trying to run very expensive and power hungry components on low power, generic supplies with potentially unstable rails and power spikes. People by nature are dramatic when attempting to get an important point across.

Yes but most people don't need more power than a good 600 watt psu most people are over killing their systems with power.Look at my psu and systems specs my rails never move. I have had two 260gtx in this rig with no problem at all and everything max oced. I have also used two 2900 xts and two 8800 gtx ultras and the list goes on. My systems doesn't bat a eye .

I hear you Tom. However, these days an extra 100w or so costs what, another $10? I'm ok with spending that for a bit more power reserve. It's not like a higher wattage PSU will cost you more on an electric bill either.

Power supplies are the only things I ever consider getting an extended warranty on. One of my Enermax Liberty 620w PSUs and my Enermax Revolution 85+ 850w PSU both have a two year extended warranty on top of Enermax's three year warranty.

That just means it won't fail after 5 years, It will become less efficient over time and the max output will probably fall in turn

I hear you Tom. However, these days an extra 100w or so costs what, another $10? I'm ok with spending that for a bit more power reserve. It's not like a higher wattage PSU will cost you more on an electric bill either.

Fair enough, if it's only an extra $10 per 100w. Mine cost around $60 and can handle 550w. To get a 650w Psu would have cost me $130, that's an extra $70 just for 100W and $.66 per watt isn't very appealing to me.
Again, i agree that quality is what matters, i just disagree with people advising high powered PSU when the system it is to be used with needs no where near that much wattage.
A higher wattage PSU can actually cost more on the power bill. If you have a 1kw PSU and your only using 350w then it's only running at 33% at which point the PSU becomes more inefficient

If it is more efficient, it might cost less.

All points in the thread are good and please don't think I am advocating buy "low" quality PSUs.

My usage has been in building "crunchers" that run 24/7. These are no frills, mb/cpu/ram/Hdd/low power video cards or onboard and some 80mm fans.

Included are Intel and AMD quads and a boat load of X2 dual cores[all overclocked]. Building all these with frugality in mind, I always bought inexpensive psu, Generally what was free shipping. The brand that I bought the most was Rosewill[I know don't throw anything at me]. Dual cores ran on 400/450s and quads on 550/600[these have pfc]. All have had strong 12v rails that hold steady with overclocks.

Out of the 50 more or less that I have bought, I have had 2 failures. One was a 450 and one was a 550. Neither damaged anything when they failed. They just refused to restart.

My usage is obviously different from the average or power user but over a long period of time[ about 3 years] I have found low/moderate inexpensive power supplies to be cost effective and dependable.

Additionally over this same period of crunching, I have not lost a single cpu. Occasional memory degradation and the frequent hard drive refusing to reboot[I have used a lot of old pulls] have been my problems.

Yes they are, and thier PSU manufacture is outsourced to OEM's. It really depends on the model as to how good each PSU is. Some or excellent and some are just average.

(I have no rig :( have pity)

and yet you're still able to post on tpu:wtf: something's amiss here. lol

don't feel bad, you could be like donald and have a negative value right now.

for the psu business, to me I buy quality and i do prefer higher wattage so i can toss in whatever I feel like without issue. could my current rig be run off of my old enermax liberty 620w, of course but then what would be powering my wifes rig? lol

before I started lookign at quality psus I went through several powmax's (4), 2 aspires, and 3 allied. (wattages ranging from 230w-580w) that's 9 psus in a matter of 5 yearsand each of them fried on me. since then I've gone through 3 psus in the past 6 years and all 3 are still runnign rigs, my current galaxy 1kw (current rig), my previous liberty 620w (wifes rig), and my prior enermax 470w (powering my parents rig).

Crappy laptop from 4 yrs ago that all scratch and cracked... NFS carbon or Oblivion or Medievall II total war or Company of Heroes don't work at all or get LESS THAN 1FPS

It lags in Sims 2 and can play Flight simulator X at like 15fps with the lowest settings

I doubt it, from the power equation P=IV (current x voltage) that would equal 216w just for a 7600gt and 360w for the 2900xt!!!!

{Edit] i forgot those are old cards and probably running on the 5v line - still 30A x 5V = 150w for an old graphics card.

I now had to go look out of curiosity. ATI says the 2900xt uses between 175w and 215w. Looking at some overclocking reviews, that looks to go to "around" 225w or maybe even higher depending on temperature since the chip is so inefficient when oc'd and running hot.

So, yeah, not 360w, but not for wimpy power supplies, either. And, of course, the 2900xt is pretty much a worst-case scenario when talking single-card power consumption.

If I understand the question correctly, it's "why all the hoopla concerning recommendations for high wattage PSU's?" Here's my take: I blame the graphic card companies. I do, but I also don't. They have to make sure that people have enough power to run the card in question without problems. I think they use the "lowest-common-denominator" type of PSU to determine their recommendation. If you read some of the reviews at places like jonnyguru.com, you'll see that some PSU's CAN'T put out half of their rated wattage without failing. Therefore, they have to recommend high. People then take this as truth and insist on a 750 watt PSU to run a 4850. I've run an AMD 3700+ (89 watts) with an 8800GTS (g92) and a reading taken while Folding showed only 175 watts from the wall! Ran just fine on a Seasonic 380 watt.

To me the obsession for a good to great PSU choice over the average is very comaparable to auto insurance. You may never use it, but you still pay through the teeth to have the peace of mind that if something does go wrong, you are covered.

It is an investment to the safety of your parts. you can get an avg. PSU ( Liability insurance), and when something goes wrong, you have to pay out of packet for the damages. Where with the better quality PSU's ( full coverage) the accidents shouldnt happen.

This doesnt mean there wont be a failure of the PSU, but your chances of PSU related issues drop drastically when running the correct PSU for the application versus one that just gets the job done.
