i just for some days ago got a E8400 C0 to my system, and i have been running 4ghz+ at the one i brought it from on a Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P, and i have a Gigabyte GA-EX38-DS4.

but it can go to 3,5ghz at 1.25000v (@ Bios) and 1.216v (CPU-Z), i tried testing it at 3,7ghz over 11hours but that wasn't stabile so i CLR_CMOS at my board and tried at 3,6ghz and ended there at 1.26875V (@ Bios) and 1.232-1.248V (@ CPU-Z) but i think my Scythe Katana2 is the problem that i can't get it stabile over 3,6ghz so the next thing i will get with be a better cooler i think about a True Cooler

are you looking for 24/7 or just for benching purposes? You can definitely up the Vcore so long as your temps don't go insanely high. I needed 1.32 to get 4.2 stable with a C0.

I've given up on going higher than 3.6 on my E7400, it's asking for too much juice and getting way too hot.

i am looking for 24-7 and if i can't get it stabile over 3,7ghz then i have a overheating problem, 'cause then i goes over 65°C then my computer automaticly frezz for about 10sec or less then comes BSOD so i need a new cooler to get 24-7 high, i tried a 80mm cooler on the back but that wasn't helping at all, it still frezz at 3,7ghz så i think i new True/Ultra-120 cooler is to recommand then i got the money for it.

I'm the same. I wanted 4ghz but couldn't get much past 3.8 without uncomfortably high volts (temps were fine) but I've clocked it back to 3.6 now.

Yeah, your temps are way too hot. I'm running a e8400 co stepping myself. At 3825mhz (425*9) with 1.32 in bios, 1.29 reported in cpuz volts, I don't break 50'c. Hell, at 4275mhz/1.5 volts I didn't break 54'c. I had a scythe katana2 before. While I never had it on my e8400, I did have it on a AMD x2 4200. The Katana would keep the x2 around 50'c under load with it OC'ed from 2.1 to 2.9. I think you have someother problem going on other than your heatsink not being able to handle you cpu temps. Are you sure you have the katana seated right? Did you get a even coating of paste on the cpu? How much paste did you use(too much is a bad thing)?

i have mounted over 100 processors in left with paste and i have som Silicon paste i use for the job, and i put a thin layer in the processor with one finger, it have never been a problem with that before, even i hate the push-pop mount on LGA-775 but if u see tests of a Katana2 it's not as great as a True or Siberian Tiger Water cooler.

it could be the type of paste that isnt as good as some other types, i know its not like for like but on 1.25vcore@3.5ghz mine stays under 40c. you could try some other thermal paste and it might give you much better temps from the same cooler rather than having to spend alot on another heatsink.

it could be the chipset needing more power not just the cpu as you dont mention what you have changed for that, if anything.

Turn on your load line.
Bump up your northbridge to the next increment (gmch).
Turn off eist/speedstep technology. You can keep c1e on.
Lock pci-e at 100.
Set Vcore to 1.36v and see where you vdroop under load on cpu-z (Intel says 1.36.7 upper limit)
Set your ram to 1:1 instead of 5:6 - you need 445fsb for 4ghz - you can overclock your ram later.
Most C0's need 1.31-1.36v to hit 4ghz prime stable.

Yes, a pic like that. And you're not messing with nearly enough voltages as Laguna has made clear.

Also Laguna, I've been reading how PCI-E should actually be at 101 due to some de-sync issues in some systems..

Acctually Intel says 1.45 VCC and VTT is the upper limit from what I've read. I had an e8400 c0 that needed 1.4+ VCC at load for 440x9 and I stressed the hell out of that chip and never had a hint of voltage degredation. I ran that thing for a little over 8 months but it did spend most of it's life at 425x9 with ~1.32 vcc load. These chips can take a serious beating.

If your at all nervous about voltages read this thread. You'll have a good laugh.

It's never a good idea to start upping your FSB while leaving your vNB, VTT, and PLL at auto since on most boards auto will set these voltages MUCH higher than they need to be, sometimes dangerously high. Playing with your CPU GTLs can also help you find stability with a slightly lower VCC and becomes nessesary for sability with a high FSB.

Your temps seem pretty high at that voltage and FSB and why are you running your ram with such loose timings?

Temps are not causeing that BSOD. I apparently ran my e8400 c0 at a little over 70c for a while when I thought the TJmax was 95c and never had any problems. These chips can handle 70c+ although I wouldn't reccomend doing that. Keep your pci-e frequency at 100 unless you need to bump it up.

i just think you're not giving it enough juice. that's really not a lot of voltage for the speeds you're trying. i mean, it's average voltage, but some procs need more juice than others, some need a whole lot of it. also, we can't tell if you're overheating without some temperature readings.

i just think you're not giving it enough juice. that's really not a lot of voltage for the speeds you're trying. i mean, it's average voltage, but some procs need more juice than others, some need a whole lot of it. also, we can't tell if you're overheating without some temperature readings.

so i say it it's frezzing in Orthos then it just need more juice? :wtf:

and it should go over 60grader under load without a problem.

persoanally, I wouldn't want to take my e8400 to 60'c .

Something to add about the Katana heatsink. I just built a e5200 system. I put the Katana2 I had in that system. With the e5200 OC'ed 600mhz (2.5 to 3.1), the Katana was able to keep the e5200 under 55'c using artic silver cermique paste running Orthos for a hour. That was with the room temp around 24'c (75'f). Yeah, the Katana is definently not the best cooler available, and comparing it to water is a waste of time, but it should be fine for a OC'ed core2dou system.

In a state of flux...
E8xxx can take 60'C, it wont hurt them.

Remember, they are designed to run on a shitty low profile stock cooler from Intel and the temp on that thing under load is 60'C if not higher, depending on your case airflow.

Saying that, I wouldn't ever run on any stock cooler so 60'C for me isn't an issue.....even with the semi-high vcore on my OC I still never see over 50'C even under 100% load using WCG or OCCT. :)

Aftermarket coolers are so cheap it makes me wonder why Intel still keep sending you the $1.20 pile of crap they call a "cooler". :shadedshu
