Im currently running a 478 3.0ghz p4 with a 2600pro agp card, i thinking of getting a 3650 or 3850 agp or the new gigabyte 4650 agp card, would it cause a bottleneck?.

I also have a old but never used AGP 775lga mobo laying around and thinking of putting a p4 3.8 620 775lga prescott processor into it with a newer agp card as mentioned above, which is the best combo without bottlenecks?, thanks.

I know its old gear, but its all i got until new system.

Depends on what resolution you play at. If you play at lower ones I would go with the 3650, if you player at higher resolutions get the 3850.

Well the 4650 is probably about equal the 3850 in performance. Since you play at such low resolutions your cpu is going to hold you back. If the 3850/4650 isn't much more than the 3650 then I would go with one of thoughs. But if the price gap is huge then go with the 3650. You really should just invest the money in a newer rig though, agp is a dead interface.

According to my research the 3650, 3850 and 4650 are priced around 20-30 dollars of each other, and yeah i know i need a new system, but it might time some time before a can spit out $1000+

I also saw a 2600XT with a 725 core speed and 1000mhz memory, and i see a bunch of different agp cards i could buy, some with higher clocks, memory speeds, stream procesors, whats more important clock speeds? memory? or archtecture?

If at all possible, try to get a PCI-e motherboard. I don't think you'll see a big difference with any of the cards you mentioned above, anyway. The 4670 is actually slightly slower than the 3850 (at least on PCI-e). That way, you'll have a card when you upgrade later.

I will get a PCI-E mobo, when i save up for a new system, and then when i have a PCIE mobo, im not going to get a 3850 or 4650, but a 4890 or 5xxx by the time i save up, i just want to put to use the 865 agp mobo i have laying around.

I still think buying AGP video card is a waste. If you can stretch your budget to $150, that is enough for a 775 motherboard, video card and memory. You already have a socket 775 processor.

Sample: From Newegg
GIGABYTE GA-G31M-ES2L $53
HIS Hightech H467QT512P Radeon HD 4670 IceQ Turbo 512MB $75
Generic ram from $20 - $25 dollars

This is enough to get you by till you're ready for that $1K system. And if you want to extend the life of the system even more, replace the P4 620 with an Intel Exxx series processor.

Dont make the mistake i made ! Up until afew months back i was still using a old 478 P4 rig Asus p4c800-delux mobo i took that old thing to its max. I waisted alot of money trying to get that old mobo to play the latest games smooth & at a desent res.

I started with HD2600xt & p4 3ghz northwood. Was crap ! Invested in a agp HD3850 was even worse :banghead: Seems a p4 3ghz northwood just dont av enough power to make a HD3850 sing. I then invested in the top cpu for the mobo a P4 3.4 prescott & some ocz platium pc3500 ram. Overclocked to 3.8ghz now it made the HD3850 sing.. Or so i thought !
Thing is it was getting me around 6,500 on 3dmark06. Still not enough really ! Crysis still run crap.
So stripped it down & sold the parts on to upgrade. Started from fresh new mobo, cpu, gpu & ram. Made me realize just how much cpu's have moved on since the old p4 cpu's.

Your best bet is make do with wot you got for now & save for a pci-e mobo / gpu & a midrange dual core.

^^ +1 to that. ANY P4 based CPU is a huge bottleneck compared to a modern CPU. *ONLY* upgrade the system at minimum cost through ebay. But it may be better to save your money so that you can get a Core 2 based system sooner.

Consider also an Asrock 775i65G mainboard off ebay as a half-way house, and the cheapest Core 2 you can find. The 775i65G will take your 2600Pro and your DDR1 so you only need to spend $20 on the mainboard and $30 on the CPU. And you will have a $50 refresh to Core 2.

There really is no point in investing any money in your current rig. You won't see any real improvement with a 3650 over your current 2600 pro(coz it's pretty much the same gpu just on a lower manufacturing node) and I doubt that you'll be able to use the full potential of a HD3850 or even a HD4650 with your setup. The best thing you could do is OC the heck out of your current rig and save up for something better. That 2600 should OC quite well if I'm not mistaken

Cheers
