Does anybody know why I am having really slow system startups? I don't have extra startup programs than I use to have. The only thing that I think it could be is my antivirus program. I use AVG now since I reformated 2 days ago..and every since then, I have a really slow startup..I don't know if that is the reason..Does anybody have any suggestions, on how to speed my startup? I use to be able to be on my desktop screen in like 35-40 seconds at most. And now it is way over a minute. Any help would be gr8.

Sometimes, no "clear cut" answer, or a few possibles: You have to 'self-debug':

Per my subject-line/title above:

You ought to do a boot.ini /SOS bootup & see what is taking SO long!

(This shows your drivers loading, sort of like LINUX does when it boots (or used to, haven't used it in a LONG while))...

That, in combination with the VERBOSE mode of Windows MSGINA.DLL dialog report can help you STUDY what parts are taking longer than others...

(COPY THIS TO NOTEPAD.EXE, what's between the dashed lines, & FOLLOW THESE DIRECTIONS)

=============================================

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\policies\system]
"VerboseStatus"=dword:00000001

=============================================

Merge that, after you save it to a .reg extension'd file, using notepad.exe!

(merge via

regedit.exe WHATEVERYOUCALLEDIT.reg

commandline)

OR

By simply double-clicking on the file itself in Explorer.exe!

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/833721

HOW TO APPLY /SOS to BOOT.INI is there... read it!

(Both of these can HELP YOU debug your bootup)

APK

P.S.=> Also, check your EVENT LOGS, SYSTEM log...

Doing those things is about as CLOSE AS I KNOW @ least, to being able to debug bootup problems... tools you use, how-to! apk

Ok, It use to take 35 seconds to load fully with the hour glass gone.. Now since I have reformatted, it takes at least 50-60 seconds until it gets to desktop screen, and then the hour glass takes about 10 seconds to go away.

I wouldn't even worried about it, if it was like a 5 second decrease of something. But man, if you were me, you could definatley tell that the startup, is really really slow.

just tried mine.. 40 seconds to make windows and a ludicrous extra 60 seconds for all my taskbar icons to appear which is when i consider windows fully loaded.. he he he

its my kerrio firewall and the ati control center that are responsible for the long time after making windows..

your 50 seconds is slow compared to your previouse 35 seconds but i have seen slower..

Most likely it's the ATi Catalyst Control Center and a defrag is needed

Not virus check. That was most likely the AVG update screen.

goto run type msconfig and disable as much stuff as you can until you boot fast and then turn each back on 1 by 1 until you find the one slowing you down the most.

try setting your lan connection to fixed IP of 192.168.100.1 with subnet mask of 255.255.255.0
is probably gonna solve your problems.

When you boot up check for "DLLMG.exe" or something like that. It comes with the drivers for Creative products (well the X-Fi line, don't know about yours) and it severly affected my boot-up. It should be in
HKEF_LOCAL_MACHINE->SOFTWARE->Microsoft->Windows->Current Version->Run
I believe for the registry key(s) (Yeah, I think theres 2). I believe there named like "audio drive enumerator" or something of that sort
Haven't had a problem since I took them off and haven't affected any of my programs or drivers.
Just take those off and you should shave a good amount of time off your boot.
What happens is I believe there is a bug in the program that makes it work the CPU 100%load

At least that's what happened to me....

Also, try putting your paging file on a seperate partition... I saw a tutorial or something in the "General Software" section on how to do it.

see if my words helps...skip the steps that u already tried.
1. check the start-up items. Run the command of "msconfig" , check the "start up" page(i am not sure of the precise name of this page,coz.i am using chinese version of windows). diable ALL the items listed. save the setting and restart.
2. check the free space of each partition of harddisk. make sure that each partition has a free space of more than 1 gb( higher ,better).
3. check the list of installed programs, through the control panel. uninstall those seldom used
4. it might be unkown comflict of softwares. keep your system as clean as possible. for example, you can disable your antivirus, then restart to see if it is faster
5. it might be fragments. defrag all partitions.
6. manage the services of your system. right click "my computer",click "manage(G)", in the window below, the third level-1 menu is "service and applications". disable unecessary auto startup services.
7. up to repend~~

set fixed ip:
hit start -> control panel -> network connections and select your LAN connection with the right mouse button, then fromthe context menu select properties.
this bring up a new window. there you access the properties of internet protocol tcp/ip.
in the new window popping up you can fill in the data i gave ya to be used as ip address.

i have been able to fix the problem described on many many machines this way.

regards,
