Hey my roommates laptop isn't playing Left 4 Dead right. The game will randomly freeze for 2-6 seconds and then act normal and keeps doing that. He also notices a few issues in COD4; It's skippy but not near as bad as left 4 dead. His laptop specs are:

2.4ghz intel dual core
2x2gb OCZ DDR2 800
9600m gt
XP 32bit

All his other games run fine and we can't figure out what is wrong

We are pretty good at turning off background processes. It only acts up in left 4 dead and a little bit in cod4.

Every other game runs fine.

Nevermind, we just figured it out. We had multicore rendering enabled.:toast::toast::toast:

I put on multicore rendering and it runs just fine. Why are you gaming with a laptop, just curious. :)

Portable desktop replacements are actually very popular. I would game on a laptop just so I could take it with me wherever I go.

Glad you've sorted it - incase you want to try getting multicore rendering working in the future i had a problem with L4D freezing up every few seconds for a couple of seconds because my mouse's usb report rate was too high - i lowered it and L4D ran fine again with multicore rendering on.
