why nvidia and ati is not making slim cards like 9800gt and 4850 ???? the other cards are taking too much space ...big cards,,some will block other pci slots too :shadedshu

Ive noticed this as well. Current gen GPUs just run way to hot to only have single slot coolers. Hopefully the next gen of gpus will run cooler, which is possible due to the proposed die shrinks.

i mean we need slim graphic cards with less dimensions...today no companies are releasing cards with dimensions of 4850 or 9800 gt....
i don't like cards with bigger dimension ..they ll cover other pci slots. to prevent this in future we need slim dx11 cards..:rockout:

there are slim cards .. look at something like 4650, 4550. if you want more performance you have to make compromises

I don't even like seeing high power cards with single slot heatsinks. Single slot coolers belong on mid range cards. Dual slot coolers are needed to decently cool today's gpus. Sure a single slot cooler may work on the lesser high-end cards but temps are usually around 80c or higher. I don't like to see graphics cards running at more than 70c (even though they supposedly take about 100c)

Cooling is related to power consumption, not to performance. It would actually be nice to see high end cards use less power. Though with today's trends it's quite unlikely.

Within one series of graphics cards (for example the 4xxx series from ATi, the 8xxx series from Nvidia) performance is directly related to power consumption (heat) thus the need for bigger, badder coolers.

Why are you complaining about the size of your cards? Do you not research before you buy? I know I do, before I drop $200 plus of my hard earned money on something. Good luck finding a card that performs as well as the GTX 200 and HD 4xxx series with tiny coolers.

i know the feeling, im chasing a single slot/low profile 9800GT and they are surprisingly hard to come by (Perth, Australia), i remember 8800GT's and 9600GSO's a plenty having single slot coolers.

maybe ill have to opt for a low power edition 9800GT...

More power needs more cooling, hence bigger and better coolers on the cards.

I like the big coolers tho, shows the cards got some muscle.:)

i have a GTS 250, one of the 55nm ones, its not really a super high end card but i think it would be pretty ok with a single slot cooler if it was good, or hey you could get one of those coolers with heatpipes that go around the back of the card, that might work pretty good

I really wish they would have released the GTS250 with a single slot cooler. The 8800GT cooler was wonderful for its size, and if it could handle the 65nm G92, it should be able to handle the 55nm G92b...

Yeah, I remember with the 8800GT, they originally came out with the single slot solution, but put a dinky, noisy, and tiny fan on it that was barely adequate (some times not even). Then, after millions of complaints, they invested the probable $.20 more per card to increase the fan size, and everything was great for them. I know someone who uses the "enhanced" single slot cooler on his GTX250, which is a rename of the 9800GTX+, which is a die shrink of the 9800GTX, which itself is a rename of the 8800GTS that Fit was referring to (see, Nvidia naming scheme = so simple even a child can understand it :) ).

alls I want is a single slot (reference?) 9800GT/8800GT 1gb, hec ill even settle for 512m.

I plan to cut the connector back to 4x so she fits into a gen 2.0 - 4x slot, from what I hear this works a treat? oh and I'm willing to kill the card :p

they are reducing the chip size....so they can also reduce the card size.....orelse mobo makers should make mobo 's with good spacing between pci slots
