Western Digital Raptor 36GB WD360ADFD 10,000RPM SATA 16MB Cache - OEM.. cost £72..

at the moment i run a small 20 gig partition for windows and some basic apps.. kind of an operating system+ i can easily back up or move about..

i am toying (credit card at the ready.. he he he) with putting this on a baby raptor.. i dont need the storage space i have plenty of that so the raptor would remain mostly empty..

would it be worth it.. ????

i aint into raid arrays just the one little raptor that wont cost an arm and leg or take up too much case space.... he he

what would you run games off it, or windows aswell and use your other hd for storage? :p

The Raptors are still too expensive imho. Whilst they are great for the added speed, it is only noticeable in transcoding and loading times - most of which (barring games + OS startup) are neglidgeable. So, for all intents and purposes you are paying to save a few seconds on loading.

If it's not FPS, it just doesn't feel like it adds much, to me that is.

They're great for the hard-core though.

get two big perpendicular recording ones and it should equal the raptor in seek and read... and destroy it in burst
ask alecstar, when one perpendicular beat both his raptor x's

Please, don't dig that up. We're gonna have to bring in summary executions if people keep this up.. lol:laugh:

thats a completly dif thread v-zero.

the new perp hdds are insane as the density/speed is much better then that of the raptors. the whole point of 10k is to read faster but not as fast as the density of the perps. get a 120gig perp for about the same price and u will get alot better deal.

"what would you run games off it, or windows as well and use your other hd for storage?"

mostly its for windows and all the little apps i use on a regular basis.. i could just bung a couple of games on it.. but leaving it mostly empty is part of the plan.. an empty drive is quicker by far than a full one..

but is it worth it.. praps not.. £72 quid aint a fortune so i will probably go for it just to see..

i seem to have missed a 3 of my thread title.. he he he

get two 320gb seagate perpendiculars and raid them, should be future-proof for a while untill hologram storage is released
another alternitive is i-ram, but the most u can have is 8gb, it is incredibly fast... there isnt a xp startup page at all
i would just instal xp and ur favorate game on it, for less than 1 sec loads

yes.. i aint after the fastest possible option money no limit.. i also dont believe in future proof.. he he he

money no object is easy i spose.. solid state boot up device and a bunch of raptors in raid array would kinda do that..

but then again i could buy a conroe and a couple of 1950s to "future proof" it even more.. six months perhaps even three months is the future where high end PCs are concerned.. trying to keep your PC right at the top is a fools game.. but there is a little of the fool in all of us.. he he he

down "fool" down.. he he he

anyways i have ordered the baby raptor.. will report back in a few days to say what if any difference it has made to my computing experience..

but if we have to wait for anything on a modern system.. its the hardrive we wait for.. someone needs to re-invent it thats for sure..

oh and a pissy little webpage to show up on my 4 meg cable broadband connection.. he he

most of the time my cpu usage reads 0% so its pretty certain i dont spent much time waiting for that.. he he

update.. its arriving tomorrow.. already convinced myself its been a waste of 80 quid including postage but will soon know for sure..

i dont give a rats wotsit about what some silly benchmark tells me.. if i dont see a noticeable real life performance speed up i will consider it a waste of money..

still the only way to find out was to buy one and see.. he he he

get two big perpendicular recording ones and it should equal the raptor in seek and read... and destroy it in burst
ask alecstar, when one perpendicular beat both his raptor x's

It beat me in reads, strongly. In reads, yes... Tigger69 HUGELY beat me there (323.2mb/s vs. my 167.1mb/s). 2x as fast!

Those perpendicular recording technology disks Seagate & Hitachi put out (now Hitachi apparently does as well) are fantastic there.

HOWEVER? That's ONLY PART OF THE STORY THOUGH!

In CPU usage (my raptor raid = 0% to Tigger69's perp recording tech HDD 3%) - there is a "catch" to this though, & Steevo (see url in my P.S. below) notes it & caught it (it's the controller I use).

AND

Seek/Access Times (my raptor raid 8.8ms to Tigger69's perp recording tech HDD 12.9ms)?

(2/3 of the test areas)

I beat Tigger69's scores cold...

Please, don't dig that up. We're gonna have to bring in summary executions if people keep this up.. lol:laugh:

No summary executions occurred that I am aware of, unless the moderator structure here was altered due to it. After all - I am STILL around (if & when I want to be).

HOWEVER, they served their purposes for ME to gain knowledge from!

(I.E./E.G.-> Who is "with or against me" for whatever reasons)

The funny part is it seemed most folks (including mods) agreed WITH me, rather than against me here on these forums mind you!...

Tell you a little "secret", v-zero - That thread was excellent in 1 capacity for me:

It shook out those not exactly "crazy about me" & was excellent in doing so.

It is fairly simple to manipulate those against you, especially those who do NOT like you, into coming out in the open, when they think you are not around. I find that they only speak out vs. others when they think you're gone, or your back is turned... (I am never either).

After all - You've got to know who is your pal, & who is not in this world (online & also offline/realworld). Doing that type of thread? LOL , Always is...

I've done it before is why, & it ALWAYS works!

Anyhow...: TROG100 - the WD 36gb is a good disk, even the older 8mb buffered ones (newest ones have 16mb buffers on them, like the "Raptor 'X'" series largest ones do (as do the newest 74gb sized units)).

I have one of the older 8mb buffered 10k rpm ones here running STRONG since 2002 or so iirc, & works great + is quite fast.

:)

APK

P.S.=> Steevo & I had a discussion here about it as well (what I quote from the URL above):

http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=16361&page=5

It is a good read about "Raptors" vs. "Perp Recording Technologies disks"... especially how mine is setup, & why, & where I gain by it...

You may find it a useful read Trog100! Good Luck... apk

Occasionally I will be.

Lately, I have been far too "pressed" time-wise @ home/work/outside of the internet-wise to be here as frequently as I was in the past.

:(

Hey, I absolutely LOVE forums:

E.G./I.E.-> Helping others out with things you know how to do is GOOD review (not just altruism/sainthood, etc.), & learning is always a blast (forums are GREAT for this imo, nothing like them compares).

* Still: This really IS the best forums I have seen to date here online though!

trying to keep your PC right at the top is a fools game.. but there is a little of the fool in all of us.. he he he

down "fool" down.. he he he

Heh, yes, I agree! I figure it this way - if you can see & use what you paid out for, for years? It's worth it...

Can you save by buying later when the equipment you actually WANT is no longer "state-of-the-art"?

Sure...

(but, then, you're not as "fast as fast gets" either - my current system being my example case-in-point: 6 months old, & vs. today's Intel Conroe's I am no longer "as fast as it gets" but, still plenty fast).

You DO get what you pay for!

And, resale value of the system stays higher imo @ least, with "premium" constituent parts in it.

anyways i have ordered the baby raptor.. will report back in a few days to say what if any difference it has made to my computing experience..

Depends on what disks you changed from really. I noticed it, believe-it-or-not!

By my "stepping up" from WD 120gb 7,200rpm 8mb buffered PATA drives (the then "speed champs" in the EIDE/PATA world) up to 36gb WD SATA 10krpm 8mb buffered Raptors when they released!

NO benchmarks required either - I could LITERALLY self-perceive a faster booting & overall faster running machine.

well i am stepping up from an hitachi deskstar.. so if i see a real life gain it wont be as big a one as it could be..

as for raptors in general.. they are the fastest single user desktop drives..

for multy user server use a 15k scsi beats em easily.. but for normal desktop use the raptor beats the scsi.. all to do with firmware it seems.. the scsi isnt optimized for single user use..

trog

ps.. and hardrive benchmarks aint worth a carrot.. so under no circumstances will i attempt to prove anything with em.. if i say its quicker it will be cos i notice in real life it being quicker.. i aint the type to kid myself that my new toy is better just cos its new either.. if its bin a waste of money i wont mind admitting it..

well i am stepping up from an hitachi deskstar.. so if i see a real life gain it wont be as big a one as it could be..

I have no idea how fast those are, I have never owned one of them (hitachi/ibm deathstars)... still, on seek/access rates afforded you by the 10,000rpm rating, you SHOULD see a faster response time on many things.

as for raptors in general.. they are the fastest single user desktop drives..

I think so as well, just based on experience/hands-on, vs. other WD disks I have used & commented on in this thread about, from my past machines.

for multy user server use a 15k scsi beats em easily.. but for normal desktop use the raptor beats the scsi.. all to do with firmware it seems.. the scsi isnt optimized for single user use..

Yes, excellent "case-in-point" & fact as well.

ps.. and hardrive benchmarks aint worth a carrot.. so under no circumstances will i attempt to prove anything with em.. if i say its quicker it will be cos i notice in real life it being quicker.. i aint the type to kid myself that my new toy is better just cos its new either.. if its bin a waste of money i wont mind admitting it..

I like the idea of perpendicular recording technology, & YES, their readspeed results.

However, imo @ least, it remains to be seen if it is as durable/long-lasting as "std." read HDD's are (like Raptors)... this matters to me @ least (it is MY money spent on my disks, and yours on YOUR disks).

Benchmarks are decent, & the only REAL "gauge" we have to judge with, @ least when comparing our disks to one another, since we all do not own the same types of harddisk drives.

BUT, nothing touches "hands-on"...

update.. i have the bloody thing.. he he

results so far a disaster.. my usual test of copying a large data file about kinda suggest the thing aint fit to be in a desktop PC so far.. he he he

a bunch of rars.. 20 x 50k totaling about 1 gig.. all in a folder..

copying them to the raptor seems okay.. but copying them from the raptor to another drive takes that long its unbelievable.. raptor to raptor is even more unbelievable.. he he

in this test my samsung spinpoint pisses all over my hitachi deskstar and my maxtor drives.. even thow it has the slowest access times..

the raptor.. well its not usable.. it litterally takes 10 x as long to shift my 1 gig if data from itself to another drive as my other drives do..

course this leads to the big question as to WHY.. he he he

trog

ps.. what a raptor should look like.. HD Tach data base.. what my raptor looks like.. he he he.. my cheapo samsung spinpoint where shifting large chunks of data is concerned (real life loading a game praps) beats all the raptors..

clearly mine aint kinda working as it should thow.. mine is the red one compared to a HD Tach data base blue one..

You need a defrag, per KennyT772 & Ketxxx suggestion in the other URL you posted in

See my subject-line/title above & this URL:

:)

* I learned something based on this myself - that HD Tach can apparently indicate the need for defragmentation based on its output graph patterns... pretty cool!
