Is AMD 9950 better alternative than AMD 9600?

Hello all. I just recently learned of all the problems plauging the AMD 9600 with the TLB and what not. I decided to replace it with the 9950. Is the 9950 a better replacement? And what is the best way of oc'ing it? Thanks.

no dont do it its not worth it go for a phenom II so u can upgrade further to am3
get a P II 720, 710, 810...

If you have the 9600, I wouldn't waste the money on an upgrade to the 9950. I'd move onto something in the Phenom II line, the 810 is only $10 more than the 9950.

Unfortunately I already went ahead with buying the 9950 because it was marked down horribly on sale. My mobo supports the Phenom II and I can always upgrade later. I upgraded to the 9950 from an AMD 64 single core running at 2.0 GHz. I was looking more into getting out of the problems with the 9600 while not breaking the bank. I got the 9950 at US $120 yesterday.

Besides all of that, is the 9950 half way decent for oc'ing? And what do you suggest the best way of oc'ing? Thanks.

Nope it's not the best oc'er. Also you wouldn't be affected by the TLB errata unless you had multiple VM's running.

So $20 more and you could have gotten the 810...The 810 really is worth the $20 over the 9950.

i need a new CPU... 720 seems like a good CPU for me. my OC'ed 4850e is holding out for now though.

In terms of the Phenom II vs the origina Pheneom 9xxx... pretty much everything, bigger cache, very nice overclockablility... and also thermal dissipation...

isn't the 9950 a 140W cpu? or did you manage to wrangle one of the later 125W versions... you might have trouble w/ your motherboard if you got a 140W version.

Also, for 120bucks... i would have bought the PhenomII 720BE, even w/ 1 less core... it's much better than the 9950.

disclosure: I got a 9750 before the PhenomIIs came out and now on the 720BE.

Heck I even think the dual core 550BE would have been a better choice unless you definitely need the multithreading...

Uptime, if possible return that processor. For that price you could get a x3 720 and have a much more powerful chip that uses less energy. I've seen x4 940's going for close to the price you paid also.

Agreed with erocker. With a 940 or an X3 720 you could get very good overclocking results as well.

Basically, everything. Better performance per clock, lower power consumption, lower heat output, better overclocking potential. The only thing the 9950 has over the 810 is the unlocked multipler, which doesn't really matter since the 810 will still out-overclock it.

His board supports 140w processors, but even the boards that claim 140w support sometimes struggle with the 140w 9950s...

Unfortunately, I am unable to return the processor back to the store where I got it from, so it looks like I'm stuck with the 9950. What's the best way going about to over clock it? Thanks.

Go AM3, the new Deneb series have a huuuuuuuge series of CPUs, each one capable of higher frequencies if you are a brave enough OC'er.

the easiest way to overclock it is just up the multy. The BEST way to overclock(best performance) find a mix between multy. and FSB(higher FSB means higher NB and ram speed)

I tried upping the mult but I can't seem to go any farther than 2.8. Is that ok for the setup, or do you need to adjust any other settings?

its not bad but with a bump in voltage you should get 3ghz

It should say something about CPU Vcore or CPU VID
not sure on that board. I know its not the best board but it still should OC that to 3ghz

I have noteced something regarding cpu v core, but it didn't have a specific temp. I did notice CPU VID but wasn't sure if that had to do with core temp or not. - Josh
