My cpu gets insanly hot, and causes performance to suffer.

I would be fine in half life 2 then all of sudden my fps drop to 11 and my CPU fan speed increases dramatically making a horrible noise. Then my frame rates would be back to normal and fan would slow down until the process would happen again. I notice this happens whenever it reaches 70C(Hot). I am not over clocking, and I reapplied thermal paste 3 days ago, still didn't fix the problem. It's been happening since I switch cases. I have 1 extra fan, could that be the problem?

you sure you have seated the hsf correctly ?

Yeah, I never removed it. It's still clamped on. Like I said, it's been working fine since I changed the chassis.

You're overclocking on the stock cooler. It's going to overheat. Do your CPU a favor and snag one of these:

you said you reapplied thermal paste 3 days ago, double check the hsf i cant think of any reason why your cpu would get that hot even with a stock cooler, make sure you dont apply too much thermal compound either

its an AMD chip. I NEVER would let any of my AMD chips even hit 60c for more then a few seconds.but thats cause i don't even like to see it close to 50c

think youll find max temp for those 65nm chips is about 68c (although i could be mistaken :laugh:

did you take it off or just wiggle it ? I would actually reseat it whether it looked ok or not. My old hsf used to clamp down but if you didnt do it just right it wouldnt make contact with the cpu even tho it looked and felt as if it had, failing that, maybe you applied way too much TIM ?

No other real reason i can see for your cpu getting that hot.

I opened the case and now it's just sticking around 40-45 range. Also I removed the fan (Forgot to mention) not sure which is causing the heat problem. The fan was facing towards cpu and was kind blowing air away from the cpu fan. I had it seated in the back of the chassis.

If you are certain the HSF is properly mounted then it's airflow. If CPU temp drops when you open the side panel there's an airflow problem. In 99% of all cases the Air flows front to back bottom to top. Change around the fans until that is happening.

An easy fix (if you are up to the challenge of modifying your case) is to put a 120mm hole in the side panel dead centered over the HSF so you are drawing in air from the outside. If there is room mount a fan to force feed air right into the HSF and make sure that the HSF fan is oriented to draw air into the HS.

Seriously dude, do yourself (and your cpu) a favor and grab a better cooler. I have an Arctic Freezer 64 Pro, I paid $20 for it about a year ago. I clamped it down on a 90nm 5200+, a 65nm Phenom 9500, then a 65nm Sempron LE-1250, then this processor here. My temps have always been well within the comfort zone. Getting a good aftermarket cooler is one of the best, cheapest and longest-lasting investment you'll ever make PC wise. Not only does it cool your components much better than before, but it is always there for you no matter what processor is under the hood, it allows you to overclock farther and improves stability.

TBH, stock cooling for CPUs is terrible considering the heat output they are getting up to these days, espically when overclocking. GPU cooling is getting better but you need to know what to look for.
