Hey guys, I recently tried out an Accelero GTX 280. It was great, but a little too big for me while moving to a Sli build.

When removing the stock cooler some of the thermal tape that was there got moved around, removed, generally messed up. What can I do to replace it?

Can I just put a dab of AS5 on all the chips, then reinstall the stock cooler? Is there anywhere I can get a replacement tape? Any ideas on what I should do?

Also, can I just apply a sane amount of AS5 to the GPU instead of making it look like a a tube of cooler threw up on the GPU?

Thanks.

Are you refering to those thermal pads for memory chips?
If yes, do not use AS5 on memory chips.

Unfortunately, it can be a bitch to replace that stuff. I tend to put the pads back as best i can, and fill the gaps with a non-conductive thermal paste (aka NOT AS5)

Can I just put a dab of AS5 on all the chips, then reinstall the stock cooler? Is there anywhere I can get a replacement tape? Any ideas on what I should do?
Normally no - the gap is too thick for paste, and requires the pads. see above.

Also, can I just apply a sane amount of AS5 to the GPU instead of making it look like a a tube of cooler threw up on the GPU?

its a good idea. sometimes the monkeys they hire to apply the paste at the factory can go a little overboard.

I'm actually having a really hard time finding anything that looks like what was used in the stock cooler. I can't find thermal tape anywhere, and the thermal pads I'm finding all seem too thick.

I recently applied AS5 to one of my EVGA GTX 280 cards. (has a stock cooler) I didn't bother with my second GTX 280 since I only saw a drop of around 2C at the most after the application. I was actually pretty amused by the massive amount of thermal compound they placed on there originally. I mean, it was everywhere and in great quantities. However, it was not the usual white silicon paste I've seen on other GPU's. They put some sort of silver compound themselves. (At least it appeared that way.) Probably some 5% or 10% generic silver stuff.

As for the pads, if the VRAM ones are messed up, then don't worry too much. Just don't overclock your VRAM past 10% to be safe. If the VRM pads are messed up, than that might be an issue since high VRM temps can cause trouble or even premature death of the video card.
