Benchmark Scores They're pretty good, nothing crazy.
Pretty soon they will have animal names... "Nvidia Angry Koala Monster 512MB" - Nvidia just doesn't treat model names like model names, they treat it as just another label.

If AMD did the same, all 3800 series would become the 4200 and then all the 4800 AND 4200 would become the H200 and H100, respectively. :banghead:

i think the current system is just fine... but meh. Pretty soon they will have animal names... "Nvidia Angry Koala Monster 512MB" - Nvidia just doesn't treat model names like model names, they treat it as just another label.

You know why that didn't happen. AMD/ATI looked at their naming system and when "What the fuck?!" Then some guy when, we are going to lay down some RULES. Also Vendors can no longer and random shit to the end of the name.

Though they did kinda screw the pooch a little with 1 or 2 variations they could have avoided.

I hate it when companys do this . It's deceiving to say the least. But thats what I rely on forums for is to cut the bull and tell me if its just a rebadged card or not.

Its alright to try to get some extra life and money out of your products but not when you tout them as new crads and their not.

I think they do this on a regular basis to get people wound up in hardware forums. Probably one else really cares. Actually if they would just wipe the slate clean and go with G100, G200, G300, etc... it would make a lot more sense than the current jumble.

This is what I think will happen, nvidia has no new cards out now and none planned until GT300's release and what will they do, they will go on a rebrand spree to get more money, because not even the GT300 is a solid idea, the die is so hard to make, I would not be suprised if they gave it a uber price or cancelled it.

how many times have they done it, instead of making new cards, just about the entire 9 series is rebranded except for what 2 cards, shame in the fact that out of those 2, 1 is a G92 and the other is a cut down G92.

then I really thought they were trying to get a uniform name when they changed to GTS250, and I am confused now, I don't know if to like it or hate it.

but ATI gets some of the blame from me too, Nvidia did it because ATI couldn't catch up with the 3XXX series, thats where it started.

Now that's a good way of thinking this. Honesty in everything my thoughs exactly at 3xxx timeline. Better to have competition.

I actually think we are light years away where we should be in graphics same with desktop processors. We should be looking atm quad-core GPUs with 1/4 dedicated to physics and each working in 4-8 times the bitrate which all should reflect back from board and all working with common OpenCL style enviroment or similar component heat should be reduced to 1/3 or something and don't tell me it's impossible.

ATI was considering dropping the "HD" from card names. I don't really think that counts as "renaming". And anyways it would have been only for the new 5000 series, that isn't rebranding.

It wouldn't surprise me if more than a few people went 8800gt > 9800gt > GTX250 without realizing what they were doing. It's practically fraud.

Taking the HD off of HD5xxx is rebranding and renaming, albiet at a smaller scale, that doesn't change the fact that it's still a renaming, clear and simple. I guess it's how you look at it, but tbh, as I said before it really doesn't matter if the product is good.

And you forgot an s and x and misplaced an X for an S (8800 GTS512 > 9800GTX > GTS250). If people didn't do research, imo it's their fault to a major extent. The card wasn't shoved in their face, it was an offered option for them to spend money on, not something they had to get...if more people would take the time to learn what the hell they're doing, there would be way less confusion from the start anyways. And while I do agree to an extent that NV is getting rediculous with name changes, as long as the product is good, I could care less what they call it, same with ATI...give us good products at competetive prices.

noooo, what nvdia did was really bad and misleading, instead of just renaming card they also make different card with the same name.
let me point out some of those
9600 GSO with 96sp 192 bit 384 MB GDDR3/2
9600 GSO with 48sp 256 bit 512 mB gddr3/2
9600 GSO with 96sp 128 bit 512 MB gddr3/2
9600 GSO with 48sp 128 bit 512 MB GDDR3/2

now look at that they have 4 variation GSO!!!!!, that's really misleading even for most techsavy user.
just look at this post below, you will understand what i mean

yes their are 128bit versions, as a matter of fact newegg only sells new versions of the 9600GSO that are 128bit and they don't even compare to the 192bit version, they compare more to the 8600GTS, the specs are even different, cause they have less rops

The GT220 is the 128bit 48sp 9600GSO

so its like you look at a review for the 9600GSO and buy one, and now your screwed because there are no mainstream reviews for the 128bit versions

i say, could we sue NVDIA for this? it's look like a scam really, and it's screwing people that's really think it was a card they mean to, and suddenly they realize, what they are buying was a shit, because there are no press release about a new spec even on nvdia site .

Dropping HD ~== dropping Geforce.

Nvidia Geforce GTX350 - Nivida GTX350

ATI HD 5850 - ATI 5850.

It's just dropping letters that carry no information... for a brand new series of cards. it is NOTHING like what nvidia is doing.

And you forgot an s and x and misplaced an X for an S (8800 GTS512 > 9800GTX > GTS250). If people didn't do research, imo it's their fault to a major extent. See what I mean? I do research. I'm big on graphics/pc tech. I read every tech site I can get my hands on. I have 7 PCs at home with wildly different types of hardware. I still got things mixed up.

Sure I agree with the idea what people should do research, but when the naming of a card makes it tough-to impossible to tell what from what, it is causing a serious problem!

All the people who bought 9000 series card were conned!
If they renamed (swapped) all the 8000 series and the 9000 names
things would be right with the world.
(Well the lower ends at least of the 9000 series!)

i.e. => 8800GTX is 9800GTX
and vice-versa 9800GTX is 8800GTX!

Then again we are all talking about it, so perhaps marketing known how
to do they job as badly as it may seem

um no a 8800GTX is not the same as a 9800GTX, the 8800GTX uses a G80 and the 9800GTX uses a G92, even though the G80's are similar they aren't the same.

sometimes research will help you find info on a card but sometimes you can search all you want and not find anything on a card, like the on the 9600gso's especially now
nvidia's partners went from
8800GS G92
9600GS G92
9600GS G94
9600GS G92 128bit
9600GS G94 128bit(very very slow)

in this case nvidia's partners(not nvidia themselves) just went insane with nvidia's change to the G94 and started ripping people off by selling a 128bit cards which are alot slower under the same name.

I did another check, seems like the GT220 is more like a 9500GT.

I know it's not the same, my jibe was at the fact that 8000 series cards
tend to be off the shelf quicker than the 9000 series counterpart. Even though
the 9 series is supposed to be newer, flashier, and more techonology -erm- ier!

hence 8600gt should be named a 9600gt, and vice-versa.
or a 8800gt should be named a 9800gt, and vice-versa.
or a 8800gtx should be named a 9800gtx, and vice-versa.
and so on.

Then I go on to say that this at least holds true for the younger in the 9 or 8 series.
Because even I know towards the high end, it a little less provable. For example
the 9800GTX+ and the 9800GX2 cards.
