It will work, but each card will only be able to use 1GB of memory. The 2nd GB of memory will be disabled on the 2gb card while in crossfire

Simply put, yes but you get the same performance as CF 4870 1GB cards.

no it doesnt. each card will be limited by its own memory. only thing that happens is that they divide the workload so they have to do less and makes things go faster
