Im planning on building a new computer as mine is frustratingly slow and i want a computer to last me through university, approximately 3/4 years. This means i will be upgrading the specs untill i get rid of it and therefore i want it rather future proof. I will be using the computer mainly for gaming, videos and school work. Im fairly new to computers so my knowledge is limited but i will be able to understand most of what you say. Basically i need help on deciding what hardware to get as i know you guys know it all.

So, to the computer. My budget is around £1,300 but that can be stretched if needs be. Im planning on getting i7 920 and x58 (been looking at the bloodrage). Im not sure what to get where the gaps are and the ones filled in arent final yet, Heres the specs so far:

Motherboard - Foxconn bloodrage £220
Processor - Intel Core i7 920 - £221
Memory - G.Skill NQ 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 1600MHz Triple Channel Kit Case - £104
Power supply unit - Corsair TX 750W - £94
Hard disk drive - WD velociraptor 300GB - £168
WD Caviar RE3 1TB 32MB Cache 7200RPM - £138
Sound card -
Graphic card - Radeon HD 5870 -£286
Case - Silverstone FT01 Fortress - £150
Optical drives -
OS- windows 7 -£70

Total - £1451

BTW im in England so i will be buying from overclockers.

Thank you for your help and all suggestions are greatly appreciated and i will look at.

video card is very good,so is the cpu and motherboard. 6gb of Ram is PERFECT more then enough yet not overkill. as for solid state if u have the money get a decent 60gb with good reviews, these should be affordable.good to install ur windows on it. not much space but at least u dont spend a fortune for the performance. and u could fit some of ur favorite games on it ;)

yeh that was what i was thinking, i was also going to go for the WD velociraptor 300GB but its expensive and not that much memory for the price. Are there any other hard drives as fast as or nearly as fast as the WD velociraptor 300GB but more memory that i can get for around the same price? thanks for the reply.

dont think so ,, a regular 7200rpm is fast enough, huge space and not as expensive...
Velociraptor 300gb is very good deal performance/space wise ,,and has very good reviews

I really think the 300GB WD VR is the best value between speed/storage and price. I can barely tell the difference n win 7 load speeds b/t the VR and the SSD that I just sold, and it has 5x the storage. Not to mention you can find VR's for under $150 US if you do some searching.

i would have to agree with the others - a 60GB SSD is not enough storage for a windows install, games, and the misc other files and programs you install and keep on your computer as time goes on. the Velociraptor is a much better option

i think u will be happy with velociraptor 300gb + 500-1000gb regular drive for storage
velociraptor gives u performence with space, ssd's are still expansive and small

thanks so far, im going for the velociraptor 300gb and WD Caviar 1TB, although im now over budget. Thanks kurosagi01, novatech does seem cheaper and therefore most of which i buy will be from them. After adding those components and the case, which i love the look of im now over budget :( any suggestions on cheaper/more appropriate specs as its too much atm.

I can't recommend Novatech highly enough, always buy my stuff from them. I've been boycotting OcUK for years now due to complete lack of Customer Service and respect. They stole money off me 3 years ago and when I approached them about it they blocked my email address and banned me from their forums.

overclockers is not exspensive , on some products are cheeper the ebuyer and scan. i mainly buy from ebuyer as there customer service and Rma procedures are the best ive ever seen. Overclockers are known for their bad Customer service. I buy odd things from overclockers, but i wouldnt reccomend someone to buy a while rig from them.

Well atm i dont mind what site i use, i might end up buying the majority on ebuyer or novatech and some of the ones that are cheaper on overclockers on overclockers. But atm i wont to focus on the build, thanks for the posts so far though.
