Something i do find interesting is how loyal people are to any particular company,
History lesson 101: Microsoft originally were ready to release DX10, they had to 'retract' it and remove some components as NVidia couldn't produce cards which would conform, the 'cut-down' version of DX10 was released and they followed this with DX10.1 (which included the full DX10 instruction set) which only ATi cards could run (at the time) the 'Big-Green' have only just released cards which comply with the DX10.1 format ....will the new 300 series cards be fast...almost certainly.....will they have a complete feature set...who knows.....but!...ATi are there already and have a few months headstart. No doubt NVidia will regain the crown.......but most of us, look at the 'bangs-per-buck' factor and this in mind ATi should do well. IMO

oh and BTW Happy Xmas to all (red and Green!! )

i tend to buy Nvidia more as i like there drivers and they fold better but i have owned a few AMD/ATI. I'm not stuck on one brand or another. To be honest i would own some ATI cards if they folded better

Yes. I would fold with my ATi cards if they folded better. Unfortunately they get the PPD of a card half it's performance and make a dreadful squealing sound when I use any GPU2 client. I'm still hoping for a new GPU3 client someday.

from what i have seen the 5850 folds about as good as a 96sp 9600GSO :wtf: if the GPU3 client brings better PPD for ATI then i will consider them more but ATM i'm happy with my GT's and GTS as they give good PPD and i don't play games much anymore

The last Nvidia card I had was a TNT2 (I had a Nforce 2 motherboard though). ATi has always given me most performance for the money I've had.

NVidia do have great folding scores......do you think it's due to CUDA interation?
GPU's do more than just throw some polygons around these days thats for sure,
with DX11 handling Physics in a different way that could improve ATi folding scores.

Is the folding side of GPUs' as big as the gaming side ?.......
I wonder if there could yet be a market for low-end cards
that could fold well against higher-end cards that don't?

it depends pm who you ask. To me folding comes before gaming,So if there was a low-end card for say $50 that folded 6kPPD overclocked but only scored ~5k 3dmark 06 i would get it..

Well i'm not loyal to any particular company however if I had to chosse between 2 gpus with similar preformance I would choose nvidia as they tend to have better support in the games I like and have the added bonus of physx :)

I've owned a fair share from both companies though.

BTW what does CUDA do?

if software supports CUDA it offloads work that the CPU would do and runs it on the GPU. the GPU is much faster in alot of cases then on the CPU

Looking at some of the folding scores, the difference in PPD cannot be down to the
raw power of the card, I think a lot of the difference must come from the drivers/software,
surely there must be some 3rd party drivers or client software out there that favours the ATi camp.......?

The High Performance GPU2 client was made with Nvidia cards in mind. It can only utilize up to 320 shaders on an ATi card. Surely there isn't any drivers or clients for ATi in terms of folding right now. There will be in the near future with the release of a GPU3 client. I'm a gamer first, so I use ATi cards. I am in the market for a smaller Nvidia card to do some folding for the time being.

I was Red until ATI introduced the Catalyst Control Center (after X800 XL). It made the download size for drivers much larger, wasted a lot of memory, and just comes across as being pointless and excessive (still feel that way today). NVIDIA was also spanking ATI at the time (8800 GT).

I went back to Red for many reasons.
1) My 8800 GT died (first card to ever internally fail on me).
2) Hated NVIDIA's renaming of cards and general corporate practices (PhysX, SLI).
3) AMD stole the price/performance crown back.
4) NVIDIA does not have a DX11 card available.

Especially because of point #2, I won't be going back to Green any time soon. I am interested in trying out Blue though (Intel Larrabee).

what do people think of DX11?... will the big 'N' pull it off this time.....they had trouble with the original DX10 suite....i'd also like to see the Nvidia cards come down in price....
The last time I spent a lot of money on any card, was the 6800 Ultra at around £350....
the wife gave me ear ache for about a month...
I just want a great card cheaply :)

I want to like ati cards, but I always have better experiences with nvidia. Overclocking, heat, noise, physical appearance. The nvidia control panel is radically better than ccc for me. On top of the overall package appeal I'm waiting on a 380 GTX for the 1.5 GBs of memory standard, meaning I can max GTA and have some future support. Doesn't make sense to pay $300 plus for a card with only 1 GB these days. I had 1 GB of vram two cards ago. Still waiting for ati to put out those 2 GB 5870s.

I still haven't heard much about the blue corner's entry....Larrabee ....sounds like it sould be on the magic round-a-bout..not inside a PC case, It'll be interesting with three companies in the fight!

I prefer (typically)AMD and ATI. My current processor is Intel, but it is my first. It has been a long time since I touched and Nvidia card, so far I am a die hard ATI guy.
