Intel's latest Clarkdale processors are the first to integrate a GPU and CPU inside a single processor package. This can lead to large cost savings and simplifications for motherboard vendors and system integrators. But does the Core i5 661 have enough GPU steam to play current games?

Seems like this CPU doesn't make a whole lot of sense... especially since you can build a HTPC for little more than 200$. Maybe this is the future, but for now it seems more like a prototype.

Damn I had hopes this might be half decent :( Nice review though and interesting concept but maybe with better driver support it could do well.

This is not a CPU review. The processor's performance itself it awesome. It beats many of AMD's quad-core chips.

They can turn silicon into processors using photolithography (an incredibly complicated process that tooks years to develop) so I expect them to be able to hire some decent software monkey's to make drivers that are as good as the drivers for their chipsets.

What`s a deal with this integration stuff. Are we headed towards commodore time. Higher prices without option to customize towards individual needs. This is meant towards AMD also. They are going to integrate shit even further and they are going to charge extra for the "technology".

This is meant towards AMD also.

Well yeah... but the Bobcat is expected to have 1 to 10W TDP and Bulldozer's GPU will be more helpful for the analytical market. By the time these come out, some support for OpenCL and DirectCompute should already be there, specially in dedicated markets.

Besides, I wouldn't mind... IGP and on-die GPUs comes in handy when that graphics card craps out!

Well have to wait and see.

Looks good to me for an IGP, consider it's from intel. It would be big deal if Intel start making Real GPU cards(that you could change mem and GPU like a motherboard xD)

seems pretty fail.

OC's with the CPU (fair enough, but a downer)
1920x1200 max? rather limiting for the future

as for performance, damn. shat on by AMD's solutions, thats for sure.

I cant see these lasting in desktops - but the laptop/netbook version may work well (size savings, mostly)

Meh...how many of us here actually use integrated GPUs? It doesn't make sense to use an integrated GPU when you can go out and spend $40 on a dedicated card that tears any integrated card to shreds.

These are most likely headed for the WalMart computer buyer's market. You know, those people that don't ever look in their computer and just look at the internet pron and do work processing?

These would be fantastic for netbooks but the proc would kill the battery life and meaning for netbooks. For a first try, this isn't bad and the business world will love these, same for AMDs APU which will be better and more able to handle things but probably cost a tad more.

Ok, let me rephrase that. How many of use actually use integrated GPUs for their main computer and gaming?

Basically, with an integrated GPU the only thing I care about is "Can it play Blu-Rays?" If yes, then it is good enough. If I want anything else, I drop a cheap descrete card in the machine.

The single link DVI does suck, but I wonder if that is a motherboard issue or a GPU issue? Perhaps we will see motherboards that decide to use single link DisplayPorts and a dual-link DVD, or maybe no display port at all and two DVIs...

no surprises. intel makes great cpus but they suck at igps/gpus. most intergated gfxs sucks anyway. low end suttable only for office software and internet browsing.

I really think a lot of folks who are dishing out Arrandale/Clarkdale reviews today are missing a very key point which is getting drowned out by either the high price of the CPU's or are looking at it from an enthusiast viewpoint.

For the first time in, sheesh I can't even remember how long if ever, Intel has managed to produce a GPU that comes close to matching a dedicated IGP from either AMD/ATI or NVIDIA. This is something that nobody, including myself, ever expected to see happen where they finally took the IGP they produced seriously.

The things that I'm really hoping Intel does this time around is to continue this focus and to improve the following:

a. Provide an area on their website, that is updated regularly, that provides a list of games that their IGP will work with, both on the desktop and notebook platforms, and ones that do not.

b. Provide driver updates for gaming titles that have issues, or to improve performance with currently working games, on a more regular basis.

c. Work closely with Blizzard to ensure that their games, such as World of Warcraft, are playable at 1024x768 sustaining a performance of no less than 25 FPS even in the most intensive areas of gameplay.

I for one would like to be able to get a notebook where I did not have to worry about if it has an AMD/ATI or NVIDIA IGP in it for a change. I just really hope that they do not drop the ball on this or it will be a huge disappointment considering the potential that can be tapped here.

Well at least the IGP performs better then any other IGP of intel.

Too bad the same situation appears that integrated IGP's need their share of memory, mostly the Systems memory which will never be that quick as usual GDDR3 and higher memory.

Ouch, No AA? Also, the GPU and Driver/Game preformance is super meh.

Does anyone here know when it will be available for purchase? I just picked up a new P55 board and was planning on the i5 750 but this might be fun to experiment with(until I get board and then sell it.) Don't get me wrong I am not choosing this over the 750 I still plan on getting that. But this might be fun too pick up also Just to play with it. Or it might come in handy in between GPU upgrades when I don't have a video card. (Well then in that case I would just stick in one of my other video cards .... but still you get my drift)
