Extracting My Documents via Linux

Hi all,

a friend of mine brought over his PC. It is BSODing at boot up, and won't even boot in safemode.

He claims it started happening after he installed Spyware Doctor, which I am assuming is some type of rootkit.

I don't want to bother with fixing the old system. All he wants is his documents. So, I tried booting from a Linux drive, and I can't see the contents of the My Documents folder.

So, what do I do now? The drive is micro-SATA, I don't have the adapter. Do you think I will be able to see the my Docs folder under Windows 7? His is an XP machine.

If you can get the drive connected to another computer, you should be able to see all of the files on it unless the drive itself is toast.

You can also try booting his to a DOS prompt and go from there.

You will be able to see it in Windows 7/Vista, i've already done it quite some times because of virus.

I thought you were trying to acess a My Documents folder from Windows 7 through Linux. That isn't possible yet-

try changing permissions on the drive.

Are you sure you're looking at the right partition? If you see Program Files and Windows folders then there is no reason that you shouldn't see the My Documents folder (which is, of course, under C:(or /dev/[sda1])\Documents and Settings\[Username]\My Documents).
