500gb HDD will NOT format in Vista ...:(

it would seem trouble is never to far behind me

after working hard with multiple TPUer we decided the only thing causing an error i was having was Vista so it was time to try Win 7 i finally get that squared away and the drive i cleared no longer works .... read on

Western Digital AAKS 500gb

shows up in windows says its working properly yadda yadda

try to quick format and it wont complete try and do a regular format it ALSO wont complete right now the drives in windows showing o info but ever smart test i can run says the drive is fine :banghead:

i just want my nightmare to END so if anyone has some input lets here it before i seriously start smashing stuff i already had an anger issue the other day i dont need another bout with stupidity today either

Are you formatting it through Computer, or Disk Management?

If you aren't using Disk Management, go into that, delete the entire partition and any other partitions on the disk, and then create a new partition and format it.

well diskpart via CMD has it formating to NTFS as we speak its at 4% with a long way to go lets hope it finishes as using the long format method via my computer resulted in 99% and then it couldnt finish

like i said im using Diskpart via CMD right now to try it since i messed with it all day getting win7 bootable on a flashdrive basically im researching attempting and just hoping to get a fix lol from something and thanks man that better explains what newtekie was talking about ive got a few other choices as well thumbs up to all the helpfull ppl id have broken more stuff by now if not for TPU :toast:

Plug drive into another PC with Windows, right-click on drive in My Computer, Properties, Tools, Check for Errors, Scan for all Errors. Might take 2-4 hours.

Otherwise, make sure Windows has proper drivers for it (I didnt check on your specs, so I dunno).

it was working fine till i told it to format (i was getting ready to use it as a test drive for Win7 for other reasons and after doing so it went caput eitherway its 40% complete in terms of reformating via diskpart in CMD

Yo, you tried the error-scanning? It should fix the bad sectors (at least blacklist them), I think.

it was an empty drive man no data was on it when it went bad so its strange i dont know if Diskpart dosent work ill try the other methods mentioned but the sooner i get this fixed the sooner i can test win 7 means the sooner i can see if vista is really the cause behind the DCOM / PnP errors i get only when i overclock past 3.4ghz if it solves that the 500gig will be rewiped and turned back into a storage drive only and ill reformat my main drive and install Win7 that way with a key and set it up properly

Ahh, I read too quickly and thought you said that Windows recognized the drive. Then Windows could have scanned the empty sectors (taking up to 4 hours or more).

yea it was fine i did a quick format and it worked but i have had bad installs due to not doing a proper format so i did full format and after that the drive just friggin vanished so to speak it was there but no size reported and it couldnt be formated so it seems diskpart is doing 1 hell of a job once its set properly ill update you guys on if none of the suggestion work

after trying 3 times i finally got it formated damn was this drive being a bisch disk managment worked but it took god damn forever to complete for an empty drive
