MP3 editing - raising volume

looking for a free/easy way to edit some MP3's and boost the volume, since there's some files i have that are far quieter than the rest of my collection.

Well, you can do it using Foobar2000 by enabling and setting a replay gain for the tracks, then using the convert option to recode them using replay gain processing. I do it to the m4a versions of tracks I make for my iphone out of my flac files.

All options will require a reencode tho, and subsequent loss in detail by recompressing the track.

Re-encode is what i'm after. i just need a solution for the MP3 CD's i burn in the car - turn it up for a quiet track, blow out my ears on the next one

Yeah, Foobar will do that. Have it scan your files for replay gain, and it should level them all out.

Foobar2000 is a very versatile music player. Takes a little while to figure out how to set it up, but once you understand it, it's very easy to use.
