  • Cutting-edge technology for today's software: The ATI Radeon HD 5450 graphics card offers great performance, allowing users to get the true Windows 7 experience with full DirectX 11 support, for less than USD $60 for a 512MB memory configuration.
  • Expanded productivity with multi-display technology: Featuring support for ATI Eyefinity multi-monitor technology, the ATI Radeon HD 5450 graphics card helps users be more productive in today's visually rich applications by expanding their on-screen real estate, putting more information at their fingertips.
  • Silent running: Offering leading-edge performance per watt, the ATI Radeon HD 5450 redefines entry level performance and ultra-low power consumption, making it possible for AIB partners to deliver passive cooling models to market in addition to whisper-quiet, single slot fan-cooled versions.
  • Rich HD multimedia experience: Home theater buffs will particularly appreciate the ATI Radeon HD 5450 graphics product. This passively-cooled, ultra-quiet card is a home theater PC builder's dream, enabling high quality, high-definition home theater experiences. The home theater experience is enriched with features such as HDMI 1.3a with Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio for the ultimate media PC.

"The ATI Radeon HD 5450 offers consumers another next-generation graphics product from AMD, and further reinforces our price-performance value at a wide range of price points," said Matt Skynner, vice president and general manager, AMD Graphics Division. This:

  • The home theater experience is enriched with features such as HDMI 1.3a with Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio for the ultimate media PC.

Whether bitstreaming the audio over HDMI is relevant, or worth the premium, is up to you.

I wish all heatsinks look like that rather than a block of aluminium with fins sticking out.

Yeah that's a stylish looking heatsink, it nice to see a low-end card with good looks;)

the funky red heatsink takes two bays - one too many, and if your TV doesn't have HDMI you'll be amazed at how useful it can be when (like me) you have an HTPC running at 1080i. If you wanna impress the parents in law run Google Earth and show them where they were born - result.

I can only say a sound *meh* to this product launch. This really doesn't stand out much compared to the previous generation and unless we see the introduction of Compute Shader accelerated software the 5450 has nothing to show for itself compared to its older sibling.

from wikipedia:

Multimedia capabilities

On video capabilities, the AVIVO HD plus UVD combination is still responsible for hardware decoding for the video codecs for Blu-ray movies playback on the Evergreen family, with a few enhancements on AVIVO HD such as blue stretch for brighter white. With Catalyst 9.11 and beyond, Flash 10.1 UVD can be used to accelerate H.264 based flash videos, such as YouTube and Hulu. Display pipeline supports xvYCC gamut and 12-bit per component output via HDMI. AVIVO HD also supports DXVA 2.0 API for Windows Vista and Windows 7.

One major milestone is that the Evergreen GPU family supports HDMI 1.3a output. The previous generation R700 family GPUs only support up to LPCM 7.1 audio and no bitstream output support for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio audio formats to external decoders. This feature is now supported on Evergreen family GPUs.

from Elite Bastards
Like the previous generation, the SAPPHIRE HD 5000 series has an on board hardware UVD (Unified Video decoder) considerably reducing CPU load and delivering smooth decoding of Blu-ray™ and HD DVD content for both VC-1 and H.264 codecs, as well as Mpeg files. In the SAPPHIRE HD 5000 series the UVD has been enhanced to be able simultaneously to decode two 1080p HD video streams and to be able to display HD video in high quality with Windows Aero mode enabled. HDMI capability has also been upgraded to HDMI 1.3a with Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio support.

Full HDMI 1.3a and the ability to decode and accelerate TWO HD video streams while accelerating the AERO interface is quite an upgrade for HTPC users.

I think they would have included an option for s-video and component video output. This would fit better with a htpc targeted computer. Onboard hdmi+DVI and vga OR s-video+component output on the second bracket.

Hah! That heatsink is awesome, albeit undoubtedly only for looks. Big red heatsink, black PCB, black-chrome bracket... Why can't all hardware follow that color scheme?

[EDIT] But come on, you didn't fold the VGA cable for the product shot? -.-' [/EDIT]
