Fake i7 920s at Newegg!

It's good that the egg is taking care of the customers who received the wrong products. I'd be willing to bet that someone stole a shipment of i7's and replaced them with those counterfit parts - wouldn't be too hard to believe, especially if newegg gets their parts via container truck.

Yes and no, i think it's stock there getting in which they are not checking it correctly and got them of guard.

Another source is telling us that 300 counterfeit processors were purchased by Newegg from D&H Distributing and that the fakes were delivered last week in a shipment totaling 2000 pieces. It was also communicated to me that Newegg has now "discovered" all 300 counterfeit processors.

thats insane. demo boxes?? demo boxes usually are empty units at least every one I have seen. sounds like thats what newegg is saying until they really get down to it.

I think the video and most of the pictures (especially the ones with the typos) are the 300 counterfeit boxes that Newegg has been able to track down. Someone is going to get in serious trouble for those.

I'd love to see some of the first RMA complaints coming in for these, maybe something like:

"Oh hi, i'm going to need to return my i7 920 cpu"

"why is that sir? is it faulty?"

"it's made out of foam. as is the fan."

"what?"

"yeah, this 'fast processor' is not in fact made from silicon. it's foam. and it isn't booting"

theres no way intel release marketing boxes/dummy units with such poor english and foam heatsinks... they'd just release empty retail boxes without serial numbers.

It's counterfeit for sure! Somebody either at newegg or (one of) the distributor(s) are cloning these boxes and stealing the originals. (Thats Obvious)

For anyone thats wondering, The blank metal cpu, blank manual, and wax fan are all in the box to match weight. For any large company that ships and receives , they dont have time or the resources to inspect each and every individual piece that comes in on a daily basis. They ship and receive based on weight. So the parts that these poor people found will guaranteed match the same weight as a retail boxed i7.

Whoever was doing this was smart in the sense of making it work! But, it was a doomed effort from the beginning, it was obviously going to be discovered. But the problem I see, is how many hands do these bulk shipments pass through before reaching the consumer. There will without a doubt be a few places this "swap" could have taken place.

I say start peeking at ebay or any other free market online seller for someone with a bulk amount of these CPU's. (They will be NIB)

I once received a bare hard drive from newegg with the anti static bag wide open. WTFook! Newegg, keep a close eye on your shipping and receiving department. ESPICALLY after this fiasco.

Funny you can still buy the 920 at newegg(not that anyone in their right mind should do so Microcenter has it for $200).

But what an awesome scam, this works for returns by the way chaps ( if your evil) keep x product send back box with carefully weighted object PROFIT!?

Used to see a lot of this when I worked for Tesco, people would return tvs , but the item inside the box would just be a bunch of weights etc, the till staff were all stupid and never bothered to check either.

Lost the company a lot of money, and some of the till staff their jobs for not checking like they are supposed too.

glad i read this it'll remind me to take a look at what i've bought in future from my local shop
well nothing suprises me about this story, as theirs always someone dodgy trying out their latest scam,
although you've got to wonder why they didn't put a bit more effort into the heatsink and processor,
i'e maybe spraying the heatsink metalic and putting pins on the cpu
ohwell that's what i'd have done

Less profit, they only need it to pass a quick visual inspection through the window since newegg can;t unbox items.
