I'm trying to decide to wait until price drop so that I can sell some of my parts now and recoup some of the loss I put into upgrading my whole system. But for now I am looking for a new video card.

How much performance should I see if I get a 5850 on a game like STALKER: SOC when I have everything at 1920x1080 maxed out at 20 fps spiking currently? I was thining ASUS EAH5850, what do you think?

I have a Zalman VF-1000 to use as an upgraded cooler on the new card if I get one, so I would definitely OC it a little bit enough to decent operating temps.

I was looking to get a real cheap 5870 or a real cheap 5850 to satisfy my needs and to future proof me seeing as I just ordered Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate on Friday, so this is going to be fun if I get my DX11 setup running before I can even upgrade the Motherboard/CPU/RAM because I just don't need to yet. (Other current/future games played: Oblivion/STALKER/Dead Space/Diablo 3/Thief 4). What are your thoughts?

Nope, overall it is pretty even with the HD4870 512MB, but yes the difference between 512MB and 1024MB is marginal at best:
http://tpucdn.com/reviews/ASUS/EAH_5830_DirectCu/images/perfrel_1920.gif
the graphic there shows relative performance, your card isn't even on and 4550 is at the bottom

so i have to assume the 5850 is better than 2 or more 3870s

that is the card i am looking at, to upgrade from my 2 4870s ... one 5850 is almost comparable in power to those.

There isn't any such thing as a "real cheap" 5850 or 5870 right now. They are in high demand so the prices have not fallen from their introduction.

when do you think they will come down? I was hoping Nvidia would step up and push the market... but they suck. I'm waiting to get a 5850 myself...

Well, from when they were introduced, they were $100 apart 5850 and 5870 models. The 5870 at $380 and 5850 for $280. But these have risen and have not gotten any better. They are still are they same place they were if not still worse.

So If I could snag myself a 280-300 5850 or a 380-390 5870 I will be happy enough with what my OC will do for a long time coming

I have a slightly used HIS 5850 that I would like to sell. PM me if you are interested and I'll get you a pic.

The 5850 would be a great upgrade. No need for the Zalman cooler on it either, you'll be happy with the stock cooler. :)

If you get any card, make sure you get it with Vapor-X.
Only if the Vapor-X is not too much more expensive ;)
The reference Cooler does fine unless you are looking for some killer OCs.
