12 Core AMD's soon and under $300...

Provantage of North Canton (isn't that the birthplace of Marilyn Manson?) is featuring a number of 12-core AMD Opteron processors on its retail website. Obviously, this is well-ahead of the launch -- and subject to the usual caveats -- but if you're a chip-head the info is rather interesting nonetheless. The most expensive of the lot, the Opteron X12 6176 SE (pictured above) is a 2.3GHz processor with an 18MB cache, 105 watts, and it can be yours for $1,485.61. If you're not quite in the mood to break the bank, the X12 6128 SE is a 2GHz chip with 16MB, 80 watts, and it's currently listed at $291. According to PC World, the processors (codenamed Magny-Cours) should start shipping to retailers "around the time Intel announces the eight-core Nehalem-EX processor," later this month -- even if it appears that someone in Ohio has jumped the gun a little bit.

But a 2.0Ghz with 16MB Cache at less than 300.00, that is a mighty big leap in price for not much difference really. I wonder if someone is not just playing a joke with the Leaked info.

Provantage has a little habit of taking "preorders" where you place the order and they don't charge you until they're ready to ship. However, when they do charge you they charge you for the price that the processor currently is at, not the price you saw when you preordered. Read them up to resellerratings!

Sure it's under $300, but the motherboard isn't going to be. Those chips are based on the G34 socket. Nothing you can run on AM3.

Now seriously, AMD has been doing something similar since a long time ago and I never really understood it. Intels fastest chip on a family is usually at least 50% faster than the slower one, but AMD packs all of its processors within a 0.5 Ghz range. That doesn't really help them selling the expensive ones and thus making money.

I actually like them until Intel got their core 2 duo and icores... BUT this 12 cores will really a big step ahead of intel!

I`m not to sure about lot of power but definitely 12 are a lot of cores. But 2GHz doesn`t sound much. I can`t see this CPU as overclocker so it would not get far from high clocked i7. I`m speaking from perspective of home user. For virtualization and server user it is amazing.

lol why don't people still get it? This is a dual-socket G34 processor, so you'll be buying two of these, plus eight RDIMM memory modules, and a $400 dual-socket motherboard. By the time you add the cost of each of these, you won't be going "yay" over this anymore. This is not a processor you install on that AMD 790GX motherboard to take on Core i7 setups.

Yeah, competition in the server market..that makes $8000 servers cost $7000. Not a big deal for consumers. Because this is not a consumer processor, an enterprise one.

But with sub $300 processors out there compared with a $1200 one and you need more than one, I think the cost savings will be more than $1000.

So that's why I said an $8000 server would cost $7000. There still isn't anything in it for consumers. Only server builders and their target buyers.

You had cheap ($300) 6-core Istanbul processors in the market for an year now. Did consumers fall for it? No. So these chips don't really target consumers, only the enterprise market.

I wish AMD would go back to the days of releasing Opty's on the mainstream consumer platform. That may be the one thing that would bring me back from Intel. I miss the days of my Opty 165 and DFI Lanparty 939.

So just to clear this up, there is no 12-core for 300, that is a typo. I like the idea of an 8-core for under 300 though.

too bad this is not for average player, am2+ and am3 sockets that is, but at least we got 6 cores coming for those, should fit right in =)
