do anyone know a trustful online store that sells blu ray drive for 40gb ps3?

and whats the benifit for getting the laser lense instead of the whole drive? the whole drive seems easier as we just plug in the cables. the lader lense seems complicated to install.... so whats the benifit for laser lense instead of the whole drive?

I would assume the laser is cheaper, so you'll save money if you know how to install one.

The actual BD-ROM is between £40-£60 to buy (I think) and I think your best bet is ebay. Also, Im not sure if the drives are switchable like you seem to think. For some reason Im thinking they are locked like XBOX360 DVD-ROMs (I will find out for you brb)

EDIT: I just spoke to a guy that knows this sort of stuff and the results are mixed. Sometimes you can switch a like-for-like drive, but some are keyed :(

Your best (maybe only) bet is to replace the laser unit ;)

TBH, if you REALLY want to save hassle, use one of those services on ebay where they pick up your old knackered PS3 (in ANY condition) and replace it on the spot with a new 80GB phat model. My m8 has used this services a couple of times and all it costs is between £35-£40 (depending on ebayer lol) Its a scam with the warranty service from SONY somewhere down the line, but TBH, who gives a shit aslong as your PS3 is running again....which it will because it will be brand new. FFS, my m8 even pinched the HDDs out before they were picked up by courier :)

Sony's Out of Warranty Service is pretty good. Just had to help my brother get it done for his 60gb that died. Are you in the US?

No problem m8, glad to help. You could grab a drive off ebay and its wanked anyway :( But the guys that do the swap service are legit (well the one my m8 uses)

Well thats about right, just want to add a little. When my brothers 60gb broke, Sony sent a prepaid 'coffin' to ship it to them, and replaced it with a 120gb PS3 Slim for $158 out the door in under 2 weeks. Console carries a 90day warranty as well.

I dont know how comfortable you are replacing the drive or the laser in the drive, so its just something to think about.

Do you want me to do some more research for you m8? Have you had your console open yet to see what model number etc your BD-ROM is?

Blimey, MS get a lot of stick about the RRoD bullshit, but at least they give peeps 3 year warranty, unlike SONY

broken 60gb and sony sent a 120gb???? i thought it must be same model? you sure? if its true then thats a pretty good deal.

sony sent prepaid coffin..... does that mean we ship to them without paying anything to usps/ups? sony took care of shipping charge?

yes my system is opened and i have spectate it. i also have took out the drive and clean the lense but still dont work. im thinking swapping blu ray drive will be super easy cause all we gotta do is plug the two cables in.

Yes he had a broken 60gb launch PS3, when he called Sony I asked him to see if they would be able to just give him a Slim since he doesn't do BC and see what they say. If he wanted another 60gb BC model it was $185 OTD, for the Slim $158 OTD. He took the Slim.

The $158 covers all shipping and handling and the cost of the system. You do not pay additional fees to UPS, prepaid labels come with the packaging.

I would call them up (1-800-345-7669) and see if you are still eligible since you have already opened the console and to see if the offer applies to the 40gb model as well. This is not a warranty repair, its an out of warranty repair so the stickers may not matter, but I would guess that they would be hesitant to work with a console you tampered with. Call and see.

I asked about the language mainly because of the rest of your posts, no offense meant, just curious.

the lens is easy to replace. I have had mine out multiple times. I'm actually looking for a deck right now but I'm not in need of the lens assembly.

Sony has a trade in program if you own one of the old phat PS3's you can trade it in and receive a ps3 slim for $140. I thought about this but tbh I really like the look of the phat so I'd like to keep it. I own a 250GB slim too anyways.

wow 140.... thats awesome deal concidering i got 40gb and slim is 120gb+ and i have same feeling..... fat looks cooler, if they can get me a fat 80gb i would love to take that instead of slim 120gb.

hearing we can trade for bigger space hdd is pretty tempting but lazy to wait and 140+ is kindda expensive. havent call sony yet. still thinking.

hey do you know if we can do the talking and transaction through email with sony? lazy to wait beep waiting with music on phone like usual customer support line in almost every company.

Just to clarify the pricing, for the Slim its $119.00 for the system, $29.00 Shipping and handling, and Tax for your state (for CA it came to $10.41) for a grand total of $158.41

So your price may differ depending on tax. Its also easier to talk to a rep on the phone, it took maybe 10-15mins tops and only a 2min wait on hold- that was during the PSN outage too, so it should be faster.
