Depends how good the new cards are.

But I believe it would be likely.

You won't see any big price drops until AMD comes out with the 5890 or 6xxx series... or the NV cards really rock... or they get into a price war.

Yea, pretty much. If they really compete on a price/performance level, then no doubt the other will follow suit.

Every time there's been a leap frog advancement in performance tech, the other guys get hammered. There are a significant number of people out there that will pay 50% more for a card with 25% more performance, just because it's the best out there.

Another consideration... With the die size of the 480, will we see dual gpu versions like the 295? It's not likely unless they come out with some sort of stacked design. My guess is the 5970 will be the king of the single PCB hill for some time, but I could be wrong :)

I say no and they may go higher. (if the Nvidia stuff is $$$ than ATI will close the gap)

LOL, last week I saw a 5830 for $299 (thats just silly)

We might see prices on drop back down to MSRP. $250, $350, $499 for the 5850, 5870 and 5970 respectively. Since I doubt there will be a lot of GTX4XX series cards to be released, I doubt we'll se much of a price change after launch.

I'm thinking a $20-$30 decrease might happen if the GTX 4xx performs 10% better than 58xx. But keep in mind, The GTX 4xx's will be $349-$499, so really, ATi is still the better buy for the bargain gamer.

+1
I doubt that NV would seriously attack the ATI prices. Knowing that ATI cards are much cheaper to building meaning that ATI would easy match the challenge so nothing would change just the profit margin would shrink for both. So I think that NV would intentionally stay at higher prices playing Physx card.
It sucks when there are no real competitiveness between ATI and NV.

Unfortunately, I doubt there will be much price pressure on ATI for quite a while. Remember how scarce 58xx's were when they were first released? Nvidia will almost certainly have similar issues with GTX 480 & 470 availability early on. With limited supply, there's little pressure for a price war.

turn out to be true more often then not, it's likely there will be no price war. But it's hard to say.

Theres also the possibility ATI will want to bury Nvidia this round, and just lower there prices for the heck of it. Even if they are already the better value for the dollar. Is it likely, thats hard to say and of course an opinion. Is it possible, of course :)

My bank awaits whatever comes of the Fermi launch.

The thing is, AMD still needs every Dollar it can get. :ohwell:
AMD is still not really in a good shape right now, they have only recently recovered.

OF course they will it's definately a plan , the price was just boosted up cause nvidia didn't had anything better at the time , i think they'll stick to the pattern they made with HD series and I think it's working , fast no-big deal cards and cheap and I have 4870 AND I AM MORE THAN PLEASED with it , it runs everything for now on 1280x1024. I don't need cuda i dont need computing i don't need any other stuff.

if you're playing at that resolution with a hd4870 it'll likely play everything for a few years more

well, the Radeon 5850 that I ordered on Thursday for 270 Euros, is now listed* for 274, so there may be indeed a trend to adapt prices to the new market situation... Nvidia helping ATI (sellers) to earn more! OMG! LOL!

hmm, i think we won't see a pricedrop soon since there is not a single online shop here in germany that has even one GTX480 ... and now after looking at the prices of the 5870 it looks like that those will be getting even more expensive since these cards have at least some kind of availability O_O"

what a bummer

like i said, i expect price droppings after the availability is high enough to cope with the demand, but right now there won't be any price drops

Why would they cut the prices? Sure i'd prefer them to do the cutting, but from a selling point, they don't really have to. GTX 400 series are just a notch faster, they are hot, noisy, they eat tons of power and they are just a notch faster than AMD's offerings. AMD just doesn't see it as any kind of threat and they don't plan do decrease prices because of that. Ppl don't want just insane performance, we now have higher requirements that also include other factors. And at the moment, overall, AMD has the upper hand. I hope NVIDIA will make a proper GTS 450 card for mid end that will be able to compete properly, but i doubt it. I mean from all the dumb things they've done in last few years i just can't expect much...
