Different drives in RAID 0

I have a 1TB WD Caviar black series drive that i put all my documents on. I just recently purchased a Green series 1TB drive which i planned to use for backups, etc. But i checked the performance, and for the most part the drives arent real different. Any reason why i shouldnt raid0 both of these drives?

It is definitely in your best interest to use the same drives/model in a RAID 0 array. This is for optimal performance and reliability.

The only real reason I wouldn't do it, is due to the Green version having a firmware that slows the drive down to a lower RPM. I can foresee problems with that. Keep the Green for storage and get another matching black drive for the Raid.

Yeah you are just asking for a bunch of corruption. Both drives have different levels of cache. The green version has 64Mbs to help when it's in powersaving mode. Also as erocker mentioned both drives are not spinning at the same rates. I believe it drops down to 5400RPM. Either way this sounds like a recipe for disaster.

Actually I just checked newegg. You could have the WD Black with 64Mbs. But still the difference in disc spin could be an issue.

I see, cool. I'll leave them alone then. Just wanted to see if it was worth experimenting but i didnt take all that into consideration.
