I'm a bit at a loss of words here.... 30fps is a huge margin, but these cards are all almost 2 years olf or more, everyone here has an idea of their performance.

4870 have 1.3 TFLOPS processing power, much faster even compare with 9800GX2 but when playing games, it's depend on compatibility, because some of games more "Likes" Nvidia Graphic card. you can see GTX 260 beats 4870 in call of duty : world at war

In a state of flux...
First hand knowledge:

I own both a 1GB 4870 (3 to be exact) and the 9800GX2.

The GX2 with newer drivers picked up a fairly decent boost and is now level with the 280 is pretty much everything....the 4870 is a fair bit behind even with its newer drivers.

That's why at the moment I'm running a GX2 and not a single 4870 while I wait for RMA...purely because its more powerful*.

*for the people who say "scaling on the GX2 is an issue"...no it isnt, all games support SLI these days and scaling is fine in most modern games. CoD4 for example gets 100% boost from a second card.

That TFLOP stat only means something across the same branding as it is a different architecture. Using it to compare performance is apples to oranges(not accurate at all).

The same can be said about Nvidia cuda cores compared to ATi stream processing units. It simply isn't the same when comparing two manufacturers and has nothing to do with compatibility. I just don't want obvious misinformation floating around misleading people. No offense. :)
