hi guys i have a Gigabyte 790FXT-A and im after some good ram and im stuck at making a decision. I currently have a 4gb kit of corsair DHX 1600DHX CL9 model - TW3x4g1600c9dhx (for those that want to know) The kit sucks and i cant hit 1600mhz and anything above 1066mhz causes blue screens. this has been tried in a couple of AM3 boards and an Intel p55 and it still couldn't hit rated speeds and it causes instability.

The kit has been RMA'ed twice and i have been sent back new kits each time and still the same problems.

I can actually hit 1600 for about 2 weeks then the blues screens start and gradually gets worse with instability and crashes.

Im looking for a good kit with a budget around £150, ive looked at a few kits but alot say they 'FOR I5 SYSTEMS' i know this may only be marketing but im just after the best stable kit that will run nice with an AM3 system.

Please help me find some nice ram please guys that works with AM3. Ive been looking at some Gskill CL7 stuff for £100 but hoping for other input.

Thanks Reefer.

hey erocker any difference between those and the ballistic sticks on newegg that are $40 cheaper?

Yes, different chips. The Ballistix in my link are designed for higher voltage, run tighter timings. Good AMD ram is few and far between.

well i have maybe $60 left i need to get a cash advance just to get the ram... im not looking insane speeds but i figure 1450 mhz at 7-7-7-24 is good enough for me hell im running ddr2 800 at 5-5-5-15 2T right now

EDIT: Wow, so first set developed cold boot issues and the second set will only run 8-8-8-24.

I'm using 8GB (4x2) of this G.Skill 1600 in my system now running 7-8-7-24 @ 1.65v...

http://www.gskill.com/products.php?index=243

I haven't tried to OC the memory yet so no clue how far they can go.... I was just thankful they could run CL7 @ 1600 on an AM3.

I know a Newegg link doesn't help everyone but that's where I got them...

G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 ...

So if yall had the choice and the money.... which ram at 8 gb or more and less than $350 to spend would you buy for a everyday rig and something that might get benched tested and tinkered with?

Perhaps, but performance wont be very good. It's worth it spending the extra bucks. I'm looking at these right now: CORSAIR DOMINATOR-GT 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SD...

Elpida Hypers are win, but that's almost too expensive for me.

I wouldn't bother with 8gb. No need. The stuff in the link above is pretty much the best you can get.

Why is 4gb enough then I guess should be my question?

Don't I want more than I need for future needs that are unforeseen?

how about this?
G.SKILL PI+ Turbulence 12GB (6 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3...

And even if i use the top of the line sapphire 2gb vid card i still only need 4?

thanks:respect:

I'm assuming you use your PC for gaming/benching/random non-intensive stuff. The problem with 8gb or populating all of your slots, is it just won't be as stable, you will most likely have to relax the timings, and will very likely have worse performance than with 4gb of ram. Video card makes no difference. In the future, if and when applications actually need that much ram, there will be better ram and your current stuff will be obsolete anyways.

i hate it when you may be right.... darn you people who know things and give me actual information that is useful,,,

so now I'm thinking a different route.. use the 4gb ram you say with the 6core and get a gig mob that's the 8xxx series.. then like you said when it becomes obsolete in a few years just go and get the new stuff and then the ddr4 stuff will probably be out and then i need a new board to run it so
thanks a ton for saving me some $$$$

I'd personally skip on the Gigabyte board and get an Asus. If their 8xx stuff is anything like their 7xx stuff you will get better memory clocks on an Asus board.

I'm more stable and get better performance with 4xsticks than I do with 2x. No loss of 1t, and you only get a true benefit from unganged with all 4 sticks...unganged "gives" each core a mem channel(and thereby, a DIMM), and if DIMMS aren't populated, there's really no point.

It also allows "clock to all DIMMs", which can allow for "idle unused" clocks to go to DIMMs not actively in use for data, so spare cycles aren't wasted.

In regular daily usage, I go just slightly over 4GB about 90% of the time. This means that there's no wait for "SuperFetch" to empty data when I load up a game or something...as there's plenty to go round, making the system a bit more "snappy" too.

More than 4GB totally isn't NEEDED, but it's definately maknig a difference here.

here they are running mem test + new loop - the led's run the whole way down each heat-spreader and pretty good. they to what part of the ram is being utilised.

Good video of the sticks in action

This is interesting. I always thought as Erocker did, that you'll run into stability issues with more ram, which will force you to loosen the timings and decrease performance. If the mail man is in a good mood today, my other 4GB set of Geil Ultra 2133 (Hyper MNH-E) sticks will be here. I'll do some testing against the 4GB that I'm running now.

ASUS has also tuned bioses specifically for 4 DIMMs, so some bioses just aren't going to do as well with just 2 DIMMs.

The K10 have two 64-bit memory controllers and Unganged mode was introduced as a new feature.
Unganged DC mode means that each of the controllers and the channels work indepenedently of each other, it really should have nothing to do with 2 or 4 DIMMs.
So it is the difference between a 128-bit memory bus, and dual 64-bit memory buses.
That is why Unganged mode should improve multitasking performance by reducing latency.
