Hi,
My first post so hello to you all!

Right then down to busniess... I have recently purchaced an XFX 4890 from a popular auction site that was sold as faulty but working. The card has no problems displaying 2D or 3D but the fan is on 100% Speed constantly from when the computer is first switched on until it is shut down. CCC states that fan speed is xx% when it clearly isn't and manual fixed fan speeds show on the screen as being accepted but still she runs flat out 100% fan speed. ATI tray has the same problem and rivatuner 2.24 wont even open into the low level clocking screens. GPU-Z 0.3.9 shows the card clocking itself from 250Mhz to 850MHz underload but any attempt to alter Gpu clock or memory in CCC are not accepted just as with the fan speed (The overclock isnt shown on GPU-Z just standard clocks). I have checked the pencil mod spot on the card which show the Ohm readings and volts are normal factory standard and the fan pins arn't bridged. I was just going to fix a low noise fan running 100% constantly to the heat shroud and remove the XFX fan altogether but it appears the fault is far more than just a faulty fan. Can any one help me or point me toward what could be the cause???? Help me fix my card and I'll love you forever :respect:

Hi man and welcome!

Oooh a 100% blowing fan on a 4890, have you gone deaf yet? Have you tethered your PC?
Well I can't really help you on that, but as far as the clocks go, have a go with our GPU tool and report back, private!

 Yep I'm going deaf. The GPUTool 0.0.0 allowed clock changes to both gpu and memory showing max clocks of 895/1215 before errors occured (1.411v full load on gpu) and GPU-Z showed that these changes had been applied so the card is communicating with software. Downside is the fan section did absolutly nothing to the speed. GPUTool showed an altered fan speed but the actual is still 100% :banghead:. I downloaded the driver for the exact model (HD-489A-ZDFC) from the xfxforce web site but device manager is showing the display unit as a 4800 series and not specificaly a 4890 so I dont know if this is a problem. The driver is as follows Driver date: 11/12/2009 Driver version: 8.690.0.0. I ran some Crysis bench marks with my 4850 (standard clocks) before removing it and the 4890 shows a 14% increase in FPS and the Win 7 experience has gone from 7.3 / 7.3 to 7.4 / 7.4 so there is definatly an improvement. with a mild o/c 875/1100 I had a 25% increase over stock 4850 with FPS which seams prety reasonable. I still have the very very very loud fan problem though so I am still in need of assistance. Does anyone with experiance of these cards think it could be the bios at fault as the card spins to full speed from the moment the power is on. My 4850 used to spin to 100% for a couple of seconds on initial power on then settle down to 40% ish and was unheard again until gaming. I have saved the 4890 bios through GPU-Z and can post some screen shots on here in the Radeon bios editor v1.25 for someone to cast an eye over if it will help??? My floppy drive is pluged in with a dos boot disk waiting:D Not flashed a video card before so I'll wait to see if anyone can think of somthing else before I flash.

The first picture is of my XFX HD4890 bios fan settings and the second picture is of the latest bios from the techpower bios database and there are differences but I just dont understand them and dont know if this is my issue or not??? I'm going to bed now because i'm tired and my head is buzzing from the loud fan noise :(

After getting fed up with using a variable resistor in the power feed of the stock fan and the amount of noise the fan was making even at low speeds I can report that I took the plunge and bought my first aftermarket vga cooler "Arctic Cooling Accelero Twin Turbo pro" and the pwm fans work off the fan socket on the 4890 card and vary under load:toast:. I have set the fans manualy to 100% and down to 20% to here the difference and every other speed in between works fine too so its now set to auto fan speed even though at 100% its only slightly louder than my tricool case fans which are set to low!!! The biggest result are the temperatures Stock Idel was around 41C and is now 30C and stock load was 70C and it is now down to 49C. The after figures are with fan speed at 100% at auto it creeps up to about 57-58C. Memory and shader temps have also fallen by similar amounts even though I was dubious about the stick on ali heatsinks. VRM's warm to the touch I would say 40C-45C ish definatly not more than 50C. Time for a volt mod and some overclocking;)

What program were you using to adjust voltage before you purchased the new video card cooler?

Also, did the cooler come with all necessary heat sinks [RAM, etc] to keep everything else cool? Or, did the cooler only come with RAM coolers?

The Cooler came with 8 ram sinks and 1 long ramsink and various vrm sinks too. My 4890 vrm's were just bare and didnt have a heatsinks fitted as standard so anything is a bonus. My card required the use of a long ramsink with a resess to clear the heatpipes of the cooler so I was left with 4 ram sinks that covered the vrm area of my non ref card much better than the vrm ones supplied. I cant use software to alter the volts of my card as I beleive its only the asus that has the volt tweek option so I pencil modded to 1.45v and got over clocking currently sat at 965 gpu (1.455v) / 1240 mem (stock voltage)

Thank you for the info, I appreciate it.

I have used GPU Voltage Tuner by AgentGOD, however, it requires a fully functional version 2.24 of RivaTuner [When launching GPU Voltage Tuner, do not have RivaTuner running, just installed].

My problem is, I was wounded twice in the head during combat which caused memory problems and learning disability. I almost have the program running under RivaTuner 2.24c, but no go yet. Although RivaTuner is finally fully functional.

It has to be something simple that I am overlooking.

Thank you again.

I seem to have it working. I simply unzipped the files into the root directory of RivaTuner.

Thanks again for your help.

Edit: Do you use CCC to adjust the fan speed or something else?

I use CCC. GPU tool works on the fan speed side of things too.
