That would be a nice upgrade from that 5900, but if you have more, you could grab a X1600 For 70 bucks more.

Why bother for a X1600, get a X1300XT or get a X1650XT.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814131227

edit:: same memory size...but from what i can tell it seems that the 9600pro core clocks faster then the 9800..is that right?

i had an old ati 9600pro i paid 89 bucks for and it clock 500/500 factory....it was 256mb but only 4xagp.....seemed stupid to make it only 4x....

Yeah but its only 4 pipes and 128 bit. Since the 9800pro has 256 bit it has 2x memore bandwidth so that cancells out the extra memory... and 4 pipes is crap... 9800pro has 8... nice suggestion though..
edit - o ya its only opengl 1.3

yes 4 more xtra pipes.....but the opengl is diff on all those cards, some 9600s have 1.5 2.0 1.3......and same with the 9800s...i couldnt tell what your 9800 had as far as opengl, but i can tell you that your 9800 is 128mb/256bit card the 9600 i suggested is 256mb/128bit.....not sure what way is better...128mb/256bit or 256mb/128bit...

truth is most games this last year wont do much on either card......about 75-100fps on some games with lower settings....dx9 wont do much either, at least with games like CoD2...

your 9800 is a good price and im not arguing anything, just giving some input is all.... good luck...:rockout:

The 9800 is almost twice as fast as a 9600, both cards are based on the same architecture, the legendary R300, but as you mentioned, the 9800 has twice the pipelines and twice the memory bandwidth. I used to have a VisionTek 9800Pro and flashed it to a XT, it was one of the finest cards I've ever had :)

Chances are that card has an R360 core and you can flash it, squeezing some 10~15% more performance from it, but I recommend getting a third party cooler like the Ati Silencer, I used to have a Tt Giant III fitted to it, and it kept my card really cool even at 450/390, good clocks for that card ;) Too bad the card died all of the sudden almost 18 months after I bought it :p

The 128MB memory with 256bit bus is probably better than 256MB of memory with 128bit bus. I benchmarked my brothers X700 (256MB Memory 128bit bus with 8 pipes) against my 9800pro (128Mb Memory 256bit bus with 8 pipes). The came out roughly equal. Add the extra pipes and other goodies and the 9800 eats a 9600 alive.

I had a 9800Pro that I thought was pretty cool until i got an x850xt and I almost cried it was such an upgrade... Anyway, if you're gonna get a 9800, at least get the pro edition.

indeed fellow shatner, as a friend of mine got a 256meg/128bit 9800pro (which i didnt know existed till i saw it and ribbed him for the crippled bandwidth!!) and my old 128meg/256 bit 9800 pro was a lot quicker (tested on virtually identical systems)

this is truly your best deal in this price range the xt is way better than the pro and with an arctic cooler can hit higher overclocks than an xtpe speeds easily anything higher performance u going into the 130-160 price range ie x850 X1K series and 7800gs all of which are not too shabby paired with an athlon64 and some decent ram

and honestly i benched my old p4 2.8ht and 9800pro flashed to xt r360 core that was clocked at 470/412 and AC cooler against a amd3500+ with an x800gto and i got like 20 more fps on all high settings than the gto did in bf2 and css

Alec's 9800 is much better than an X1300. I have to agree that's a pretty good deal.
