Hi All!

I am looking to overclock my Brother's PC for him, his setup is as follows:

Windows Vista 64bit
4GB DDR2 800 Mhz
nVidia GeForce 8800 GT 512MB @ 600 Mhz
Intel 2 Core Q6600 @ 2.4 Ghz
ASUS P5N-E SLI Motherboard
PSU 750W

Stock fans installed at the moment, but thinking of getting Corsair H50-1 water cooling system?

What suggested settings would be required in the BIOS? I'd like to crank up the whole system, the CPU, GPU & memory, if anybody could assist with some instructions please?

I understand the CPU could be cranked up to around 3.6 Ghz and still be stable?

Thanks! :D

Welcome to the forums Anarchist!

I'd have a little search on the forums first if I were you as this will have been covered already in multiple threads. Keep an eye on your current temps and start with one thing at a time, i.e. the CPU then start on the GFX and see how far you can get on the stock cooler which isn't very good compared to other coolers obviously - unless the case has incredibly decent air-flow.

OK just to add to this, my Brother's PC has the 'G0' version. Is this 1 of the better models?

So, simply upping the multiplier affects only the CPU? This is actually all I want to do first and test it. See what heat builds up. I'm doing all of this from stock settings.

I've gone into CPU Config and tried to change the Multiplier from 9 to 11 to test with @ 2.94 Ghz. Hit F10 to save and exit, but when booted up and checked in CPU-Z it's not actually saved it and still at x9

Rebooted and back into BIOS, went into 'JumperFree Configuiration' screen and set the options to 'AI Overclock' and set it to 10% and booted up. It froze about a minute later.

q6600's max multiplyer is 9, that's why it won't increase any. and yes G0 is the better revision over B3's. G0's do overclock better, especially the earlier batches of G0's but the latter batches don't overclock quite as well. Should be able to reach 3.2ghz more than likely.

You're going to have to overclock by raising the FSB; on my 680i nvidia board it actually lets you input the FSB directly, IE: 1066(2.4ghz), 1333(3ghz), and so on. You can enter and value you want for the FSB and obviously any value higher than 1066 will increase your CPU's clock speed. Other boards give you the actual fsb speed. Since intel's FSB is quad pumped, 1066=266 value in bios, and again same concept, increase that value and your cpu speed will increase.

As i'm sure you've read, CPU's can only overclock so much without altering the voltages, so as you increase you will have to up CPU voltage, Northbridge voltage, and/or FSB voltage. Now you don't have to increase all 3 diff voltages to necessarily get stability. CPU voltage comes first, then i do northbridge. You'll just have to play around with it as every board and chip is different and requires different settings.

Also what program are you using to test stability? i recommend OCCT

There is something magical about how easy it is to overclock LGA 775 processors.

...my Q6600 is sitting pretty at 2.8 GHz with stock voltage at the moment...easy to bump it to 3.2-3.6 for gaming as long as your mobo can handle above a 400 MHz FSB...

yes G0 is better, can you download coretemp and find out what it states for VID?? Also your fsb setting is how you overclock it, it should be set at 1066mhz (266) simply up it to 1333mhz (333) and bump up your cpore voltage, it should boot up just fine it will be at 3ghz.

eh lol only 3.6ghz requires 400fsb, 389 for 3.4ghz. at least if we're still talking 9x multiplyer. almost all current and recent 775 boards can handle up to that, or dam close.

see his board will not show, 400 or 389 it will show 1600mhz for 3.6ghz, thats how nvidia boards work. they have fsb holes to like 1600 may not work but 1650 will perform like a champ

yea, remembered that from my 680i, lol never really understood why nvidia wanted to odd ball out on that setting and how the fsb's value is displayed.
