Can anyone confirm/try this? The 5850 can be flashed to the 5870 without problems... but that only sets new clocks and voltage

some guy said: And I'm seeing reports that these unlockable ones are just review samples sent out like this, flashed with a GTX 470 BIOS. Some of the review samples even have the extra memory chips, which the GTX 465 wouldn't have, it wouldn't make sense for them to sell cards with extra unusable peices, just a waste of money.

That makes sense

IMO that would truly make most reviews garbage...as most include OC'ing and if they are not disabled like the actual retail models they are seriously misrepresenting what will be sold

If you read on in the post (2nd link) they say its possible thoes were just 465 samples without certain modifications besides the bios from a 470 just to send them out. Would be cool for this to happen, but im sure once Nvidia people read/hear rumors of this theyll shut down the possibility quickly.

The most likely cause is that a batch of GTX470s were picked off the line and flashed to GTX465s to send out to reviewers because POV didn't have enough stock of actual GTX465 cards. A very small amount of these cards probably also got mixed in with the regular retail cards.

If you look on the card W1z got for review, the memory chips are physically gone, so there is no chance of a flash working on his card.

Also, there was something over at XtremeSystems about testing the unlock on 12 different cards. Of the 12, only 3 unlocked, 4 recognized the new BIOS but didn't unlock anything, and the other 5 turned into bricks...

So I wouldn't rush out to the stores to buy a GTX465 expecting a GTX470 under the hood.

It looks like all GTX465 PoV shipment is mixed here. :D
