Question for people who know what they are sayin. i have a heatsink on my processor that is titanium. the center is a block and it has grates extending from the center. i thought that because of the block it would be bad at cooling however my system runs at 25-27 c 30 during games. someone explain why?

what is your cpu??? that will have some to do with temps.
my whole house pc uses an amd 2600+ sep. and it runs at about those temps but my 3200 and 3800x2 run higher...
i wont lie idk....

I think makers using titanium on their coolers is just a gimmick because in terms of thermal transfer qualities, titanium is lousy (when compared to other metals) with even plain old iron is 4 times more efficient. As with electricity, silver is the best metal conductor - when not tarnished, so rarely used. Gold next, but expensive. Then copper, which tarnishes (corrodes) too but is fairly easy to control, but it's heavy. Finally aluminum which has good conductive properties and is light. But it, and cooper too, scratches easily. Then way down the list of metals is titanium, a relatively poor conductor, light, but very strong and scratch resistant, and so minimizes the risk of trapped, insulating air pockets being formed in scratches and dents between the HSF and CPU die.

The simple remedy, of course, is don't scratch or dent the mating surfaces! And since just about any user who has ever had thermal paste on his fingers knows, it is probably not a good idea to allow the mating surfaces to get scratched and dented, and so we take care to protect those surfaces.

A quick search of NewEgg for titanium HSFs shows none! OCZ has the Tempest Cooler with titanium over cooper - but it did not fare that well in this Techgage review with final comments like, "the results are nothing amazing" and it goes on to recommend NOT using it for on dual core systems unless in a low demand HTPC. (and yet they gave it an 8 out of 10!! )

So the only reason I see for HP to use titanium HSFs (actually aluminum with titanium coated plate) is so less care (therefore less time) is needed in shipping, packing, and handling - therefore saving a couple pennies per machine in production costs. Its always the bottom line with the big makers.

As to your original question, Verizon, I think since your temps are quite acceptable, great actually (are you sure you are monitoring the CPU temps? and not system?) then something else must be happening right - like the HS and case vents are clean of dust and dirt, the CPU fan is spinning freely, and you must have excellent front to back air flow. :rockout:

Interesting Conduction Chart

the cooling is exelent for what it should run. dual 120mm fans no dust. anmd i was monitoring correctly and i cant get a screen shot because it was in bios. i want to buy a copper heatsink with the heatpipe tech. im thinking of the big typhoon.

but in the mean time athlonx2 and namslas need to get me a bios to control fan speed because its only allowed to run max of 50% of what it should!!! HPs and there energy saving tech.

That's not really a good place to check because (1) you had to reboot to get there and a CPU can actually cool down quite a bit during that power cycling, and (2), there's no load on the CPU.

It is better to use a Windows based monitoring program (unless you want to wire up a front panel display to go into a empty drive bay) that will keep tabs of your temps while Windows is running and you put the PC through its paces. Most new motherboards come with a utilities disk with a hardware monitor program. Or you can use Motherboard Monitor or Speedfan - depending on which one supports the board in use. I prefer Motherboard Monitor but it does not support as many newer boards as Speedfan does. But either one will put the temp as a system tray icon for ready reference.

titanium? i don't think so, maybe its the other "silver" metal used in 65% of heat sinks...aka aluminum. plus i confirmed this by looking at the part number (5187-5704), and it is aluminum.

It is titanium - but only a thin protective coat - not the whole HS.

If it's an Asus board your cpu temperature readings are most likely at least 6 celcius more likely 10 celcius below what cpu really is. I have an Asus board and I add 10 celcius to actual reading for the real temperature. Some say add 7 celcius to actual reading. I add aproximately 10 and lately 12 to be very sure. :)

I would not be so sure and would say that all depends on your load under YOUR use, not other folks. Surfing the web and reading email or playing solitaire is nothing for most PCs. Serious games and video editing and graphics design can be very taxing. Some systems do virtually nothing when idle, other than a little OS and disk housekeeping or AV scans. Other systems crunch SETI units or Fold DNA segments - which bumps the CPU use up to 100% when the PC is not used - 100% for hours (even days) on end. Those are the temps you need to be aware of.

I would advise against going by what "some say" - no offense meant Giggla. Unless you know for a fact those folks have identical PCs that operate in a similar environments and similar loads. Note that environment is complex - ambient room temp, internal case temperature (also affected by video card(s), number of drives, number of RAM sticks) CPU HSF heat displacement abilities, case air flow, dirt build up, etc. all affect the operating environment. So I say don't "guess" what your temps might be under full load. Monitor and watch them - this is even more important if you ever - even once - overclock, which I don't recommend, or play advanced 3D automated games.
i have added more fans and it claims i am running 15c idle and 18 during cod1 according to speedfan
I believe you - I don't believe the readings. 18°C = 64.4°F. Unless you use alternative (water or Peltier for example) cooling, or you keep your room air temperature (the operating environment) colder than 64.4°F, there is no way anything inside the PC could be colder than the room - regardless the number of fans blowing - "wind chill effect" only affects living tissue.

So, it would appear Speedfan is not using the correct parameters to calculate the temps for your board's sensors. I recommend you look at your board's utility disk or web site for their hardware monitor program and run that. But it will be for their whole line of boards and so will have to address different sensors and monitors. I just built a couple Foxconn systems for a client and the included program reversed the system and CPU readings so I had to manually configure - no big deal once I determined the correct sensor.

I believe you - I don't believe the readings. 18°C = 64.4°F... ...inside the PC could be colder than the room

during these readings the compmuter was in my room, and in my room i like to keep things about 45-60f because it helps me sleep. i open my window all the way at night with a fan running and close it during the day. my room keeps cold very well. i do admit the rreadings may be a little lower than they actualy are but i doubt it is above 21c.

but thanks for your input bill, more input is why im a part of this forum
