high guys right straight down to brass tacks.

i was out the other day and left my pc running
to my horror i came home and found my W/C pump (swiftech) had failed and was just making a ticking noise.

everything seamed fine but i had no picture (unsurprised)

luckily i had a spare pump so i`ve fitted it reset the cmos and now have my screen back right the way up until the win7 load screen disappears. then it just goes blank

i`ve now left it for over an hour as i looks like its working just nothing is on it.

suddenly i got the blue startup screen and i can now see the build number and the fact that i`m win 7 test mode.

its as if the desktop is there but there is nothing on it.

mouse still works so i pressed ctrl+alt+delete and got the error

the logon process was unable to display the security and logon options when ctrl alt delete was pressed if the os does not respond restart computer by using power switch

now here was me thinking my card was dead but is it possible just my os has gone tits up and my card may still work.

is there a chance my card my be ok as my cpu is still fine as far as i can see

I hate being mr doom and hardware gloom ( well really I do enjoy it )
but the odds of the os corrupting its self are something like 1/100 in this case
combined with you saying the install is going slower then normal id say your gpu is cooked
I have had gpus that have "burned" up
they stilled displayed a picture just fine and ran basic tasks but when you put them to load they either insta-locked , crashed or started stuttering ( some of the stream cores burned up )

But still it needs to be checked because there is nothing worse than wasting money.

Maybe pick up a old v card like a GF 7300 ( some thing like $25 ). Or get one of a friend or family member just for testing.

What kind of v card is it ?. Some have leds on them to tell you if there is a fault or not with the card.

yeah its a gtx260

i`m pretty sure its dead to but i`m gonna try all avenues before junking it.
i know its a slim chance it the os but i gotta try huh

i do have a spare card but its air cooled and just as suspect i`ll give it a go later

the re install is failing due to a corupted install iso ive tried burning slower but i think i may have a suspect dvd drive as well cos its always been a bit gay

o well i`ve had 5 good years outta this pc i`ve been itching for a reason to rebuild for a while

YAY IT LIVES

so far so good I've watched a couple of movies on my clean win 7 install after 4 days of trying to repair the OS.
It seams my DVD drive was the problem (which I've long suspected but muddled along by not owning any DVD's)

I tried an old drive but this just threw up more install errors.

i`m thinking the ide on my mobo is gone its been dodgy for a while.
i got every error from cannot find file on disk (tried slow burning)
swapped drives and did a clean install but then windows wouldn't pick up drivers for it.
RINSE, REPEAT.

Eventually i unplugged all the drives and installed from USB.
i`ve been meaning to upgrade the dvd to sata for ages but i never use them so i`m bein a cheap ass.

i'm still at a loss as to why the pump failure ruined my OS though.

never the less thanks to all that helped, sympathised and winced for me:rockout:
