So Im trying to install an HP printer on a new computer with XP and the driver software is not recognizing it. XP does when using the add hardware way, but it has the yellow ? beside it. When I click on it, it says it is working properly although when I check in the printers menu, it doesnt show up. I dl'd the latest drivers, but maybe I should try a different OS version. any thoughts?

Have you tried different ports? Does it work on other PCs? Did you uninstall old drivers/are there other printer drivers on there that could be causing problems?

I can't think of many other ideas atm lol

What printer model and type of connection?
What file did you try (like, where did you get it)?

Edit:

Well, whatever connection, check bios make sure usb or parallel ports are set up correctly.
Check device manager, that the drivers and ports are good.

Un-install all printer drivers and software for that printer, run ccleaner(junk scan and registry scan).

Re-boot, install software and drivers, re-boot then plug in printer(if using usb) or plug in printer then boot(if using parallel port).

Info from manual: "There may be a conflict with your virus protection program. There may be a conflict with another software program. There may be a conflict with a peripheral device connected to the printer."

Try turning off anti-virus while you install.

'Unknown Device' Message Displays during Software Installation in Windows XP
Setting up and Connecting the Printer
HP Photosmart Printer Software and Driver (32 bit only; per HP's website, they do not support 64 bit windows os with this printer)

Sorry, I couldn't be of more help, if I think of anything or find any more info... I will post it.
Goodluck.:)
