I recently upgraded System from 939 to AM3 :D was so happy since i took 955BE and Crosshair IV.So yesterday i finally bought G.Skill 4gb Ram and i was ready to Build new system:nutkick:
So when i finished...i installed windows 7, flashed bios, installed all drivers and Asus Probe II and than i was dissapointed:\ \
Idle temps : MB 41 , NB 55!!!, SB 53, CPU 45 total disaster. Room temp is 24C.I have antec 900 with 2 front intake 120mm fans,1x side intake 120mm, top 200mm, and back 120mm fan as exhaust.
I googled about this problem and what i have found is that MoBo passive Cooler doesnt have any contact with NB and SB chips :S. I dont know shall i try and remove the chipset cooler and put new AS5 on it...and try to make contact between Chipset and Cooler(but than i can lose 3 year warrinty)...since i called the store where i bought mobo and they told me they dont have other board for replacement and if i give them back this one i should wait around 30 ish days or so till they send this one back to asus and get new one?!
Also mail from ASUS is like this : Hello dear customer if your temps are not going over 70C than its ok to use motherboard.
WTF?
Also posted on ASUS RoG website and facebook page and post were deleted:mad:

I would put it under water with this. Not sure if that would void the warranty though

Yeah, seems to be a common problem. My Crosshair3 would hit 76c on load...

Asus doesn't exactly have the best reputation when it comes to mobo cooling, at least in my experience. Way back with the A8N Sli, the heat of the chipset would kill the fan...prompting me to write a review of chipset coolers at the time...geez...that must been 2007 or something...

Since then, I have taken these issues to heart, and almost ALWAYS remove the chipset cooler and repaste it...

Those temperatures are perfectly acceptable with room to spare. I don't see an issue. Do what cadaveca said. Just be warned it's a pain in the butt to get off the old yellow crap they put on the heatsink.

The issue is that once you get some 3D going, that 55 can turn to 75 or higher very easily. dual cards, mind you, but still...it's like GTX480SLi requiring a 158cfm fan blwoing on the cards...chipsets SHOULD HAVE FANS DAMMIT!

Yellow crap...guitar pick. ;)

I did read about an issue with the standoffs on the cooler being too long and not making good contact with the NB. If you take the heatsink off and find that to be the case, you can either RMA it or fix it with a file. ChickenPatty fixed his this way. Heck I replaced the TIM on mine and I have a fan pointed right at it and it idles at 41c stock / 47c overclocked. I ordered a block directly from EK and it's been two weeks so far and still no block. :(

i also had this problem with my IV, got a waterblock now. their is a thread over at XS, i will try to find it and edit post. the yellow gunk they use as thermal paste is paraffin wax.

@ erocker

yes they are acceptable but the thread over @ XS shows some really bad quality issues with the heatsink not even making ANY contact..

BTW i have my water block mounted but am cooling passive(no water running threw block) and in BFBC2 i get a nice 43.c NB 36.c SB(with a nice slow fan on it btw)

Hmm ok than if u think its fine than ill accept it:)
But i saw peps on some other forum made post about this board with 127+ pages :p
The point is that heatsink is not even touching the chips and when re-paste is done and heatsink is lowered(make standoffs shorter) u get like 30ish C temps

yep computertechy thats the thread:)

as long as you don't hit the 60.c/65.c area you should be fine, quoted from asus themselves.

please fill in your system specs as well please Miljan88 and make sure the drop down says show(in User CP area)

you could try to RMA your IV but lots of others on that thread did and got another board with same temp problem.

EDIT: their are IV owners that don't have this problem, the only real working solution is to grind down the standoff's and apply proper thermal paste tbh

ANOTHER EDIT: my standoff's were fine on mine, so do please check yours, i just think its the paraffin wax.

Thanks again mate! I already called the Store where i bought mobo...they are authorized service for ASUS and some other known Brands(am from Vienna Btw,Austria) and they told me that at the moment they dont have any Crosshair IV to replace mine and if they send back my MoBo to ASUS and wait for new one it could take a month:( thats kinda too much and i am finished with university for this year(so i have time for gaming and OC)...and also i Cba going back to S939. So i am gonna connect to my laptop now...and ill try to remove the chipset cooler from the board and make a short video(just to see whats going on with COoling here).

Benchmark Scores i'm working on that
get used to that, i did 2 things to my crosshair IV to fix that, i took the heat spreader off and filed down the standoffs so that it had better contact and replaced the tim, i also set a high rpm fan on top of my 5870 to cool off the heatspreaders. it keeps the nb at about 40c load and the rest of the stuff noticeably cooler

Heat it up with a hair dryer, believe me it's much easier. Alcohol will just get it we until it evaporates. :)

That wasnt the problem but thanks anyway mate! someone can find this usefull.

@ erocker
Yeah i used hair dryer:) much easier:rockout:

Atm got 46C(was 55) on nb and 47(was 54-55)on SB idle temps. When i do any benchmark temp go up for like few degrees so i guess its ok...tho maybe i cut down those standoffs a bit moar when i have time. Thanks everyone for help! :rockout:
edit: Used AS 5....and they say 200hours needed. maybe temps will go down a bit in few days.

Good to hear you got it sorted.

I guess in the end, you can't blame ASUS for using that TIM...when these boards get shipped all over the world, that TIM makes sure the heatsink doesn't pop off, and possibly damage the chip beneath it. The coolers don't suck...it's how they are applied!

good job mate :toast: temps are much better and yes once u burn in AS5 it will get better.

@cadaveca
i agree but for the price of the board they could have done something much better, this has never been a problem with the older crosshair boards.

Well, my Crosshair3 wasn't. Simple tiny black pad between the heatsink proper and the attached fins, same yellow goop elsewhere too. I literally dropped 30+c by changing the paste and getting some airflow over it, and 20c without the fan. 20c because of bad paste? That's horrible, and yes, they could have done better, but don't. By thier own standards posted above, my board fails to pass.

I just simply consider boards as "some assembly required" now. No big deal to me, to be completely honest...just takes a few minutes before mounting the board into the case.

very much agree.

most people wouldn't have the know how to sort these problems though. look's like Asus QA should be overhauled.
