The GTX280 is second handed, and my target is (or was) an HD5770.

Even if the GTX280 is DX10 when the time DX11 hits seriously the market the current VGAs will be obsolete.

So what do you think, the GTX280 can it be called an upgrade from my current HD4850 or the HD5770 will be enough?

Thanx for the answers.

Yeah, I'd say it was an upgrade. You'd get 4890 performance, plus Phys-X at the same time..

What about an HD4890, is more powerful or the GTX280 is better?

I thought Phys-X was only BS.

depends on how much you should pay for the old 280?

PhysX isnt BS, its got some amazing effects, there just isnt so many games supporting it, like 20-40

GTX 280 is faster. 4890 is comparable to GTX260 216sp.

And yes, Phys-X can be good..I was an ageia supporter, and I like the visuals of PHys-X, but I have not spent alot of time hyping it after nV's first PHys-X driver broke Ageia cards, and at the time, nV guys were saying that thier practice was "to make sure new things don't break old ones".

But some good visuals to be had there.

the price isn't a crucial fact 'cause here in Mexico all the prices are real rip-offs, anyway, both costs almost the same, the GTX280 is a tad expensive (about $260 bucks) and is second-haded, the HD5770 is new (about $215 bucks).

Actually, 4890 is halfway in between GTX 260 216sp and GTX 275/280 (275=280) "overall".

But when you factor in PhysX, Stereo3D, and CUDA (if you plan on using any of those), then even a GTX 260 192sp could be subjectively better than a 4890.

In terms of speed/power:

GTX 260
HD 4870 512MB (better avoid this if you want 1920x1200 w/4xAA in most games)
HD 4870 1GB
GTX 260-216 (only like 2% faster than 4870 1GB)
HD 4890
GTX 275
GTX 280 (1GB framebuffer and 32 ROP's will matter more with future games vs GTX 275)
GTX 285

I'd say that NV cards offer better IQ but the difference is not so bad. It's a touchy subject though..

Yo, why not go for GTX 460 1GB? Against the price tag of a whopping $260 for a 2nd-hand 280, a new GTX 460 is a killer deal. It's pretty much as fast as a GTX 280 overall, plus all the DX11 goodies, and runs cooler and quieter, eats less electricity, and can overclock like a beast!

Its an upgrade performance-wise yep.. and aside from that you get perks like physix, increase performance in photoshop, and rip dvd movies 3x faster through cuda..

+1 Couldn't have said it any better. :respect:

And as Bo Fox said why not consider GTX 460? It will be a superb upgrade. :toast:

mmm, It's not that far of the GTX280, could be an option, the problem is the availeability of it, maybe it's the time I ask for a discount of the GTX280 and digg deeper and see if I can find a GTX460 reseller.

THX for the help, I'll keep you updated.

PhysX, IMO, marketing BS but always nice to have if you run into games that have a problem with ATi cards ala Batman:Arkham Asylum. With that said maybe 4 games utilize hardware PhysX with about 35-40 that handle PhysX via software.

Your best bet would be a GTX460 if you can find one. If not next best would be GTX280.

Ok guys, finally I picked up the GTX280, was way cheaper than the GTX460, about $100 bucks.

I see a massive increase in the Vantage performance score, from 8800 using my past HD4850 to 15000 with the GTX280, hope I see the same increase in the games.

THX for all the advices.
